Adverse events happen. REPORT ALL ADVERSE EVENTS AND EXPOSURES TO THE CFD ASAP! Not only is it important to capture the event for risk management reasons, but to support the student and foster resilience around the event.
Georgetown University’s COVID-19 Resource Center reflects Georgetown University's layered approach to protecting the health and safety of our community.
Student Tracking
Students should follow the guidance of the university around vaccination and testing requirements for the university. Students may be required to submit proof of vaccination in multiple systems (ie., GU360, CastleBranch, site-specific websites, etc). Sites may have symptom tracking systems in place and must be abided.
Student Reporting
Students will immediately report a positive test to the clinical site and the program. Students should notify the Clinical Faculty/Placement Director, CFA, and preceptor with this information, and follow the guidance of the clinical site.
The university recognizes the importance of protecting private health information and the autonomy of the individual, and will limit to the extent possible what personal information is collected, who has access to it, how it is used, and how long it is retained to the extent possible consistent with its need to address the public health challenge presented by COVID-19.
Quarantine and Procedure for Student Returning to School/Facility
Students who test positive for COVID-19 or come in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 will self quarantine as recommended by the clinical site policy or CDC guidelines. For further reference, see the CDC Guidelines for quarantine procedures.
Instruct the student to follow the procedures of their clinical setting. This should include:
Decontamination
Reporting to the preceptor
Obtain specimens on the source patient (Hep B, Hep C, Rapid HIV)
Complete any related documentation required by the site.
The student should make an appointment with their PCP for evaluation and any initial blood work.
Refer the student to the CFD ASAP.

The student will be contacted by GU Risk Management as follow-up.
Debrief with the student and provide support if needed.
Encourage debrief with the preceptor if this has not already occurred.
Advise the student to avoid discussions with risk management at the site until they have spoken with the CFD/PD.
Refer the student to the CFD ASAP.
Reach out to the preceptor to offer support related to the student's involvement.
Ensure that the student completes the Incident Reporting Form* within 48 hours of the event. This should include:
