I hope you all enjoyed the long holiday weekend. We hope you were able to take a moment to reflect on the significance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and its celebration of equality, justice, and service. This weekend also provided time to honor the peaceful transfer of power that underscores the strength of our democracy, an important value to share with our students as they learn about civic engagement and history.
While the extra time off and chilly temperatures provide a wonderful opportunity for rest and togetherness, we also know many of our students spent time on digital devices over the long weekend. This is a good time to revisit how we can keep our students safe online. As digital tools and platforms increasingly play a role in our children’s lives, it’s important to stay proactive and informed about their online activities.
We invite all parents and guardians to join us for an Internet Safety Round Table with Officer Weber. This discussion will cover practical tips for monitoring online usage and recognizing potential risks. We want to foster healthy digital habits in our students. Your involvement and insights are invaluable as we work together to keep our children safe and informed in the digital world. We will work with Officer Weber to find a new date to share soon!
As a reminder, this discussion is specifically for adults. Officer Weber and Mrs. Wahpekeche will continue to work together as we support our students with digital citizenship lessons in school. Thank you for your partnership in supporting our students’ growth, safety, and success.

Thank you for reading along with us! It's not too late to start if you haven't yet. Your child's packet has the reading calendar and nightly discussion questions for your family. We have a few more books if your family needs to borrow one. Trivia questions are texted nightly and posted on social media.
We have been working to hit 350 slips turned in to earn a 2 minute robot dance party as a school! I think we can do it!
Tomorrow Mrs. Killebrew's and Mrs. Vierra's classes will be our first recipients of a special activity bag because their classes had the most slips turned in Tuesday. They will pass the bag to another class on Thursday. Way to go!

Start getting those auditions ready! The talent show is coming back to GES on February! Fifth Grade Emcees will sign up to audition, and any 2nd - 5th grader can sign up to audition for the show! Get ready to show us your talent! We are looking for singers, dancers, musicians, and any special talents. Emcees will sign up and be given a script to learn and read at their audition! If your child would like to audition, please complete this FORM by Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 5:00pm. You will then receive information to sign-up for a try-out time on Feb. 3.

This Friday is a GES College Colors Day. Your child is encouraged to come in College gear or colors to celebrate a college going culture.
STAAR Interim Testing Dates
STAAR Interim Testing Dates
Our 3rd-5th grade students will participate in Interim Testing on the following dates:
January 22- Grades 3-5 Reading
January 23rd- Grades 3-5 Math
January 28th- Grade 5 Science
This may impact the daily schedule of students as we provide a larger block on instructional time in the mornings for students to take their online assessments. We ask that you ensure students have a good night of rest and healthy breakfast so they can perform at their best for these assessments.
These tests are designed by the State of Texas in preparation for the STAAR tests later in the spring. Teachers receive valuable data that help them adjust instruction and ensure students have mastered the necessary TEKs. It also provides data for both students and families that may predict how students will perform on those upcoming assessments.

The Fifth Grade Committee has planned this year's GROOVY GLOW DANCE for Friday, January 31st from 6-8 PM at GES. Each ticket is $5 each, every student must be accompanied by an adult, and all adults and students must have a ticket. There will be dancing in the gym, concessions and glow items for sale in the cafeteria, and a movie in the music room. Hope your family can join us for this fun event! All proceeds will go to the 5th grade committee for their end of the year celebrations and class gift.

Join the Spring 2025 Class of Leadership GCISD
The second cohort of Leadership GCISD begins January 21 and spots are filling quickly. This is a semester-long program that gives parents, staff and community members an inside look at our school district. As a member of this program, you’ll have the opportunity to experience engaging presentations, connect with district leaders and gain valuable insights! Play it Safe
GCISD offers the "Play It Safe" program for all students in grades PK-5. The GCISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC is a volunteer council comprised of parents and community members that reflect the values of the district and community) has previewed and recommended these programs for all GCISD elementary schools. The curriculum and presentations are aligned with district philosophy. This program is a personal safety program and does not address human sexuality. Play It Safe is a child abuse prevention and awareness program that incorporates individual grade level, age-appropriate scripts and movies to teach children how to reduce the risk of sexual and physical abuse, and sexual assault. It teaches them to recognize potentially abusive behavior, provides the tools to respond to threatening situations, and encourages them to report abuse to a trusted adult.

El Consejo de Asesoramiento para la Salud Escolar (SHAC, por sus siglas en inglés: School Health Advisory Council) de GCISD (SHAC es un consejo de voluntarios compuesto de padres de familia e integrantes de la comunidad que reflejan los valores del distrito y de la comunidad) ha visto de antemano y recomienda estos programas para todas las escuelas primarias de GCISD. The Women's Center of Tarrant County, Inc., uses trained employees to present a fact-based personal safety program for students. The presentations are classroom-based so that children are in a familiar environment, and feel comfortable to interact with the trainer. A video is shown, followed by a question and answer time.

Last Wednesday you should have received a copy of your child's MOY iReady reports, which detail their results and growth from the beginning of the year (BOY) to the middle of the year.
I put together a video reviewing a sample student score report to share more information on iReady growth and hopefully answer questions you may have while reviewing your child's progress. If you have additional questions regarding your child's iReady results, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher.

Visitors may join us for lunch with their child if they are signed up in advance HERE. Available Dec 2-19. Please be sure to share our Sign-up link with your family members who wish to come eat with your child. Also, it is critical that anyone coming to lunch with your child, if not accompanying the guardian, is on your child's emergency contact list.
Lunch guests will sign-in through our secure vestibule with a valid ID, stop by the front office to check-in and receive a visitor badge, and then meet their GES star at the entrance to the cafeteria. Families will have the option to sit outside in the picnic table area for lunch or in our cafeteria at an empty table near the windows. Parents are welcome to bring in outside food when having their lunch with their child. We ask that you please be courteous to the rest of the community and limit lunch visits with your child to no more than one per month so that all families have the opportunity to visit. We appreciate your cooperation.
Each family needs only 1 slot reserved. For example, Mom, Dad, and sister may all come eat lunch with Nancy. Only Mom needs to be registered as 1 visitor to reserve 1 picnic table together. When it asks for quantity of visitors, please select just 1. Lunch visitors may only eat with their child or student. You may not invite friends to sit with you when coming for lunch.

Volunteer Background Check
We LOVE our volunteers at GES! This year we are encouraging all families who plan to come to campus and interact with students to go ahead and complete the background check. Volunteers must complete this EACH YEAR beginning in August! It can take 1-2 weeks for your background check to clear. If you plan to be a guest reader, volunteer at a class party, chaperone a field trip, volunteer with PTA, open car doors with our Dad's Club, etc. you will need a completed Background Check! kjkhkuh

In order to volunteer at GES, or around GCISD, all volunteers must:
read the Volunteer Handbook (this replaces the previous face to face volunteer trainings held on campus)
watch the appropriate video included in the handbook
electronically sign the verification Google form for each campus you plan to volunteer
complete the volunteer background check. A link is included in the handbook.
When you are ready to volunteer at GES, feel free to call the front office at 817-251-5735 to verify that both of the required steps have been recorded as completed. We appreciate your support as you complete these steps and volunteer to work with our GES students.
