GES Families,
I have some VERY exciting, TOP SECRET news to share! We are anxiously awaiting the launch of our One School One Book program again this January! We are thrilled to offer our students another opportunity to celebrate reading! Last year our students had a wonderful reading adventure with Wedgie and Gizmo. If you are new to GES, One School One Book is a family engagement program where the whole school including students, staff, and families read the same book together at the same time! We have nightly reading assignments (designed to be completed in 10-15 minutes) and trivia questions for prizes each day. The students get very excited about it! We had so much fun last year reading together and we hope you will join us on a new adventure this year!
Shhh! The next part is a secret from the kids! Please, don't tell your children so we can keep it a surprise for everyone. We want them to learn about it together with their classmates when we reveal the book at school to kick-off the program in January. At that time, families will receive more information about the program including the reading calendar, quiz questions, and more!
This year we will be reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown! You may have heard that Pixar recently released the movie. If you haven't seen it yet, we encourage your children to read the book first! They are definitely somewhat different and the book is rich with details, characterization, and imagery that will have them painting pictures in their minds. If you already saw the movie, rest assured your child will still love reading the book with the whole school and searching for details each night for the daily drawings.
In an effort to make the program more cost effective and sustainable for years to come, we are asking for families to purchase a copy of the book (currently $8 on Amazon) if possible or borrow from a local library. We will only provide copies of the book for families that specifically request it. Please select the one option that works best for your family by our deadline - December 2nd! We only need one form completed per family. You can find the form here: https://forms.gle/nTjm7x7jfJQer1Qe6
Thanks so much and we look forward to beginning a new reading adventure in just a few weeks!
All my best,
Mrs. Hale
Students will be taking their MOY (middle of the year) iReady Assessments in both reading and math when they return from the Thanksgiving Holiday. The testing window is Dec. 2-13. Each grade level has specific dates planned that they will share with families in their grade level newsletters. Following the assessments, families will receive a report letting you know your child's progress towards their target goal and stretch goal for the year. "Target goals" means the child has grown a full year, while "stretch goals" aim to push children even further, either catching them up to grade level peers or pushing them beyond average growth.
Your child can continue to practice their skills over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Even 20 minutes a day of practice can have a significant increase over time in your child's progress. We encourage them to continue practicing to reach their goals!
Students and staff are off the week of Nov. 25-29 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. We hope you enjoy the week off with family and friends! We look forward to welcoming students back on Monday, December 2.
We have lots of illness going around during this time of the year. We want to remind everyone that the 24 hour rule still applies for students with fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. Please keep your child home if they have any of these symptoms until they are 24 hours without medication. We appreciate you assistance in preventing the spread of viruses.
Our 4th and 5th grade Spelling Bee will be Friday, Nov. 20th. Families of our participants are invited to join us. Please plan to arrive between 7:45am-8:00am to check-in with your valid ID through our secure vestibule.
Rather than a live audience this year, students across the building will have the opportunity to watch the Spelling Bee from their classrooms via video streaming if teachers would like.
Coach Basil has a Group Order available until December 4th for students who would like to purchase their own set of stacking cups. To purchase your student’s Speed Stacks Set and/or StackMat, go to this link: https://www.speedstacks.com/go/275269-18142228/
After you place the order, print out the receipt and have your student bring the receipt to Coach Basil to pick up their item(s). Please encourage your student to have a second choice in mind since it is ‘First come, First served’ on color and design choices.
Friendly reminder to please have your child check the Lost and Found if you are missing any jackets, water bottles, lunch boxes, etc. We have MANY items that are piling up.
Also, if you label items it is much more likely that we will be able to get them back to your child! We check them regularly, show them on the morning announcements, and try our best to get students back their items. Names help us tremendously before we have to donate them.
If you took home a blank note to write a letter of gratitude, please send it back to school this week for your child's teacher. You are welcome to send it directly or drop it in the office for delivery. We look forward to showing our staff with letters of appreciation for all their hard work.
We needed to make an adjustment to the originally published date for the November Principal's Book Club. We are pushing it back one week, so we will meet together on Wednesday, Nov. 20. We are opening this one to our 2nd-4th grade students. The book featured this month is related to Election season and explains the electoral college to students. We'll have a fun activity with the Ozobots for students to do after we read aloud together. Please sign up HERE if you'll be able to join us so we can plan for enough materials. The sign-up will close on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 3pm. Hope to see you there!

Each year GES PTA awards capital improvement grants to members of the GES community. Expenditures must be on permanent additions to GES, not on consumptive supplies, and are considered GES property after purchase. The Capital Improvements Committee reviews grant applications. The committee will prioritize enhancement requests, and make financially responsible expenditure recommendations that benefit the most students as possible. If you would like to volunteer to serve on the Capital Improvements Committee, please email Jamie Horn at programsandfundraising@gespta.org

Our October Volunteer of the Month is Laura Adams. Laura logged many volunteer hours going above and beyond to plan our 2024 Carnival of the Stars. It was an amazing event for the whole community. We are so grateful for her leadership and dedication and all she does for GES and PTA. Thank you, Laura!
Do you know a GCISD employee who is always putting their best foot forward for students? Someone who goes out of their way to make others feel special? A person who lights up the room the moment they walk in? Did you witness a particular moment you would like to highlight?
Please share your nomination for our Stars of GCISD – a program, sponsored by community partners, such as Wise Guys Pizzeria and EECU, to shine the light on the very people who make GCISD shine every day. Your nomination will be sent to the nominee, their supervisor, and entered into a monthly selection for the GCISD Star of the Month.
Thank you for helping us celebrate and recognize our incredible employees – the Stars of GCISD! Click HERE to nominate someone today!
According to unofficial results from Tarrant County, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD voters have approved the school district’s Voter-Approved Tax Ratification Election, listed as Proposition A on the ballot, with 57.9% of voters in favor and 42.1% against. Thanks to our community’s support, the VATRE will provide approximately $6 million in much-needed funding for school district operations. View this message from Superintendent Dr. Brad Schnautz.
If you have left over Halloween candy that you are looking to get rid of, we are glad to take it off your hands! We put it out throughout the year for the staff in the lounge or in candy dishes in the office.
Save the date 4th grade families for an upcoming holiday performance! Our 4th grade students will be performing If You Take a Mouse to the Movies: A Holiday Music Program on Tuesday, Dec. 17. They will perform at 9am for students and staff only and at 6:30pm for families.
This month will be focused on GRATITUDE. It can be defined as choosing to notice and appreciate things in our life, things in others, and things in the world. Circle Up topics, counseling lessons, and more will include this character trait. Please consider partnering with GES by browsing the Family Connection Newsletter for conversation starters and ideas at home.
Visitors may join us for lunch with their child if they are signed up in advance HERE. Available November dates are Nov. 6-22. Please be sure to share our Sign-up link with your family members who wish to come eat with your child. Also, it is critical that anyone coming to lunch with your child, if not accompanying the guardian, is on your child's emergency contact list.
Lunch guests will sign-in through our secure vestibule with a valid ID, stop by the front office to check-in and receive a visitor badge, and then meet their GES star at the entrance to the cafeteria. Families will have the option to sit outside in the picnic table area for lunch or in our cafeteria at an empty table near the windows. Parents are welcome to bring in outside food when having their lunch with their child. We ask that you please be courteous to the rest of the community and limit lunch visits with your child to no more than one per month so that all families have the opportunity to visit. We appreciate your cooperation.
Each family needs only 1 slot reserved. For example, Mom, Dad, and sister may all come eat lunch with Nancy. Only Mom needs to be registered as 1 visitor to reserve 1 picnic table together. When it asks for quantity of visitors, please select just 1. Lunch visitors may only eat with their child or student. You may not invite friends to sit with you when coming for lunch.

We LOVE our volunteers at GES! This year we are encouraging all families who plan to come to campus and interact with students to go ahead and complete the background check. Volunteers must complete this EACH YEAR beginning in August! It can take 1-2 weeks for your background check to clear. If you plan to be a guest reader, volunteer at a class party, chaperone a field trip, volunteer with PTA, open car doors with our Dad's Club, etc. you will need a completed Background Check! kjkhkuh
The following link takes you to the online Volunteer Handbook and background check: https://www.gcisd.net/o/gcisd/page/volunteer-background-check
In order to volunteer at GES, or around GCISD, all volunteers must:
read the Volunteer Handbook (this replaces the previous face to face volunteer trainings held on campus)
watch the appropriate video included in the handbook
electronically sign the verification Google form for each campus you plan to volunteer
complete the volunteer background check. A link is included in the handbook.
When you are ready to volunteer at GES, feel free to call the front office at 817-251-5735 to verify that both of the required steps have been recorded as completed. We appreciate your support as you complete these steps and volunteer to work with our GES students.
If you are on Facebook, we would love for you to follow our Grapevine Elementary Facebook page if you're not already. We post activities and campus life in addition to helpful reminders. We would love for you to follow our story!
