In my project I decided to explore the way that memories we believe to be accurate to the way events occurred are actually constantly changing and being affected by external stimuli. I did a lot of research throughout my project about how sensory intervention may affect these memories, this research is represented in my final design which has panels going through it, following the lines of heat maps.

I developed this odd idea of linking snail shells to that of a female body, exploring ways in which I can use circular shapes in order to distort the natural make up of a body. I did this through using pillows and heavy fabric in order to create these protruding shapes. This project is greatly conceptual and it is quite frankly just a playful way of which I was able to bring Robinet Testard’s snail houses illustration to life and find a way to use it to create my own world of people living and being one with snail shells.

The work is photographs of my final outcome from the FMP project, the theme of the project was based on "Expeditions". The final outcome is a garment constructed from recycled tent fabric using creative pattern cutting. The asymmetric surface design is inspired by the lines and shapes within maps that create the link to the theme of the expedition while the silhouette of the garment is influenced by the clothing that historic explorers used on real expeditions.

For my FMP, I chose to focus on Sexual Harassment. It was initially inspired by the Sarah Everard case that was very apparent on social media as it triggered many women to come forward and share their own experiences of sexual harassment and assault. I created a Fashion Promotional Magazine, using facts and figures from a survey that I conducted. These are a few of the most striking images that were the result. On the jacket are personal stories that women shared with me through my survey.

For my FMP in Fashion, my main idea was looking at the concept of 'Double Lives'. This idea came around through finding out information about my Great Great Aunt, she had two husbands at the same time without either of them knowing about one another (bigamy). I also looked at ideas such as concealment, contrast and polygamy/bigamy within this topic. I developed these ideas into a fashion concept and ideas for print, producing a set of garments that confuse the viewer in the same way an optical illusion confuses the eye.

The title of my FMP is the "memory of time". I was inspired by my experience during the pandemic and how my concept of time faltered. I wanted to explore the changing perception of time I was affronted with during the pandemic as a whole compared to how I perceived time pre covid-19. Throughout the project I was reflecting on the connection between our perception of time and movement, how there was movement even within the apparent stillness. I wanted to explore the implication that time is not a solid structure but a malleable, abstract scale that we use to navigate life.

I have submitted one of the cushion covers which I created in the project "Out of the frying pan." The designs I painted onto fabric were inspired from a variety of kitchen utensils which I looked at in depth and developed into patterns. After experimenting with a variety of colour ways I decided on using a warm colour pallet as I wanted the patterns to stand out as much as possible.

The Beat Generation is an American social and literary movement originating from the 1950s; I became interested in The Beats after reading Jack Kerouac’s ''On The Road''. I was inspired by this movement to explore a series of prints using a range of techniques including lino printing and collage. Designing a dust jacket for a fictitious book named ''Intermittently Beautiful But Ultimately Pointless'' allowed me to indulge in my love for repeat patterns whilst linking back to my project’s starting point in a somewhat satirical way.

My FMP was focused on creating textures found within three biomes: Tropical Rainforest, Desert and Marine. I chose these biomes as they are all visually different and include different textures and colours. This sample was made for the Marine biome, focusing on coral. It includes a range of hand embroidery techniques, knitting, and sequins for embellishment.

This piece is a wall-hanging which I have completed through appliqué. It is supposed to be displayed in a therapy room, and so I have used rounded shapes and muted colours to help the client feel at ease. The shapes and colours are extracted from 'Prison Break' since I explored issues of feeling grounded in nature, versus feeling alone and detached from reality. These feelings can be present in institutionalised inmates and also people struggling with mental illness, and so I linked this through my piece. Sporadically, there is a floral print to augment themes of nature throughout my piece.

I chose to explore the how the word ‘overwhelming’ could be contextualised for my FMP. Through researching the psychedelic era of the 60s, I designed my own prints to be envisioned on a series of catsuits. These were then used in a collaborative photoshoot based around the concept of confusing visuals.

I am submitting my final piece which I created for my FMP. This is a paper dress garment, made entirely out of paper as this allows my design to be sustainable, paper is also very versatile. My piece includes a large pleated skirt and bodice with a ruffle to fit around the neck and a hand fan to accessorise, with added hand sewn embroidery on the bodice and ruffle. This piece is inspired by typical Tudor fashion for the high end market as this was my main focus for my FMP, therefore I have included typical Tudor features from a Tudor women's dress in my design. for example the ruffle, exaggerated figure and hand fan. I decided to have a photoshoot of me wearing the garment to really show off its features. I also created a fashion editorial from my photographs, with Tudor references.

In my final project I explored the narratives within fairy tales; specifically looking into the darker themes of Hansel and Gretel. I created a magazine that acted as a storybook to communicate the tale and the twists I put upon it.

I also created a short film to go alongside the final piece, this promoted the magazine and was inspired by horror trailers. The styling, makeup, photography and editing was all done by myself and was mostly self-taught.

"Under Cover" The desperate dive under the duvet to escape the increasingly cold world. Everything is opening up. Chaotic schedules created. We revert to overthinking, and a longing for that day in bed you promised yourself you’d avoid during lockdown, not least when freedoms were restored. Paranoid about fitting in to the point we become drained, distorting ourselves as we desperately try to be ‘normal’, it can be easier to fall into bed, hiding beneath the covers. We wish for these sofa days where we blend into the furniture, duvet days submerged in voluptuous volume. Yet, when we get them, they often feel restrictive and limiting.

Are we just camouflaging the personal for the social?

I chose to use different shades of grey thread for the top half of my final piece, this is to represent the dark times during the start of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s. I picked out significant quotes and words from the interviews with Mark and Channan to symbolise the negative parts of living with HIV. I then used lighter grey tones gradually as the stitching gets closer to the second half of my final piece. This is to represent an improvement for the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS, as treatment and medication is developed and things start to get more positive. For this next half of my piece I used colours associated with happiness, yellow, red and orange. This half of the piece also shows a photo of Channan at a recent HIV/AIDS conference and a recent photo of Mark.

I would hope that this piece would invoke feelings of reassurance, for any HIV/AIDS sufferers viewing it.

I began looking at paradoxes of movement and time which led me to look at the impossibilities. Exploring the illusions of consciousness which led me to sustainable fashion designers who are independently produced like Lauren Perrin, Celeste Burgoyne who inspired my research into a glove silhouette from my own fabric. My design incorporates the idea of digital weave, interlocking circular shapes. The idea was whatever angle my body was in or what shape my arms created the pattern lines would sync up. Forming a kinetic movement.

This digital collection and two small garments were a part of the development of my FMP around the theme of transience in the natural world. Here I have taken inspiration from the structure of cocoons - both in the print and garment design. The surface prints were painted on sheer fabrics using ink with hand cut stencils, the fabric was then scanned digitally and overlaid onto my fashion illustrations. The two tops were made from this fabric and inspired by the digital collection.
