But if you do get a bit bored of hiking and breathtaking views, you are an only a bus, train or flight away from top destinations across Western Europe and beyond. True, the cost of living is high but scholarship opportunities match up to it!

博士課程に入る前のフランス語圏留学

ジュネーヴ大学に留学したのは2019年の秋学期からでした。東大の修士2年目にあたります。当時から博士課程への進学、そしてフランス語圏での博士号取得を計画していましたが、博士課程からいきなり学位取得留学をすることには強いハードルを感じていました。そんな私にとって、USTEPでのジュネーヴ大学への留学は最も魅力的な選択肢の一つでした。

フランス語演劇に没頭

ジュネーヴでの思い出を語ろうとするといくら時間があっても足りませんが、その中で特に一つ挙げるとすれば、アクターとして参加したフランス語演劇の授業でした。ピエール・コルネイユの『ロワイヤル広場』の一幕でしたが、伝統的な韻文詩劇の発音を基礎からみっちり教わりました。「抑揚をつけないで、一本の線のように」という先生の言葉がとても印象的で、毎日学校から帰る道すがら台詞覚えをしていました。

レマン湖畔ランニング

週に一度は、寮から街の中心のレマン湖までランニングするようにしていました。もともとそこまでスポーツをするタイプではないのですが、ジュネーヴの朝の清々しさについ、駆け出してしまいます。その甲斐あってか、秋に街を挙げて行われるプチマラソン大会にも有志で参加させていただきました。

その後の博士課程留学でもジュネーヴを本気で検討したくらいです。結論から言えば博士留学はパリで始めましたが、私にとってジュネーヴ大学は今も一番思い入れが深い留学先になっています。

A Francophone Study Abroad Before My PhD

I began my exchange at the University of Geneva in the fall semester of 2019, during my second year as a Master's student at the University of Tokyo. At the time, I was already planning to pursue a doctoral degree in the French-speaking world. However, I felt that jumping straight into a degree program abroad for my PhD would be a significant hurdle. For someone like me, studying at the University of Geneva through the USTEP exchange program was one of the most attractive options available.

Immersed in French Theater

I don't have enough time to share all my memories of Geneva, but if I had to choose one in particular, it would be the French theater class I joined as an actor. We performed a scene from Pierre Corneille's La Place Royale, and I received intensive instruction, right from the basics, on the pronunciation for traditional verse drama. The professor's words, "Don't use intonation; speak it like a single, straight line," left a deep impression on me, and I would practice my lines every day on my way home from the university.

Running by Lake Geneva

I made it a habit to run once a week from my dormitory to Lake Geneva in the city center. I'm not usually very athletic, but the crisp, refreshing morning air in Geneva always inspired me to go for a run. Perhaps thanks to this routine, I even ended up voluntarily participating in a city-wide fun run held in the autumn.

I even seriously considered Geneva for my subsequent doctoral studies. In the end, I began my PhD in Paris, but to this day, the University of Geneva remains the study abroad destination that holds the most special place in my heart.
