ガジャマダ大学（UGM）は、インドネシアの文化と歴史の中心地として名高い都市、ジョグジャカルタに位置しています。この地域は、今も王政が続いており（インドネシアは共和政を採用しているが、ジョグジャカルタは特別州として地域王室制度が存続しており、王＝スルタンが州知事を務めている）、クラトンと呼ばれるスルタン王宮が有名です。壮大なボロブドゥール寺院やプランバナン寺院群に近いことでも知られています。

週末には、活気あふれる街へと繰り出し、無数にある賑やかなカフェに集まったり、マリオボロ通りで有名なストリートフードを食べ歩いたり、アルンアルン・キドゥル（王宮南広場。「アルンアルン Alun-Alun」は「広場」、「キドゥル Kidul」は「南」の意）のような夜の人気スポットで友人たちと交流したりして過ごします。
長期休暇になると市外へ足を延ばし、この地域が誇る素晴らしい自然や文化遺産を探索します。人気の小旅行には、グヌン・キドゥル（ジョグジャカルタの南にある県。「グヌン Gunung」は「山」の意。ビーチで有名）の美しいビーチへのドライブ、メラピ山麓での冒険的なサンライズ・ジープツアー、そして壮大なボロブドゥール寺院やプランバナン寺院への訪問などがあります。寺院を訪れる際には、有名なラーマーヤナ・バレエの公演に合わせて計画を立てることもよくあります。

UGM students spend their time embracing the full spectrum of what Yogyakarta offers.
On weekends, they dive into the city's vibrant life, gathering in the thousands of bustling cafes, exploring the famous street food on Jalan Malioboro, and socializing at popular evening spots like the Alun-Alun Kidul.
For long holidays, they venture beyond the city to explore the region's incredible natural and cultural treasures. Popular excursions include road trips to the stunning beaches of Gunung Kidul, adventurous sunrise jeep tours on the slopes of Mount Merapi, and unforgettable visits to the magnificent Borobudur and Prambanan temples, often timing their trip to catch the famous Ramayana Ballet performance.

ジョグジャカルタの食文化はジャワの伝統を色濃く反映しており、独特の甘みと旨味のある味わいが特徴です。
この街を代表する不動の名物は、若いジャックフルーツを柔らかくじっくりと煮込んだシチュー「グドゥッ」で、訪れる人は必ず味わうべき逸品です。この代表的な料理の他にも、地元には有名な食べ物が豊富にあります。例えば、自転車のスポークに刺して焼き、風味豊かなスープで味わうユニークなマトンのサテ「サテ・クラタッ」（「サテ Sate」は焼き鳥のようにして作る肉料理のこと。「クラタッ Klathak」はジョグジャカルタ風という意味）や、心温まる炭火調理の「バッミー・ジャワ」（ジャワ風麺料理）などです。
さらに、甘い緑豆餡が入ったお菓子「バッピア・パトッ」（「バッピア Bakpia」はジョグジャカルタの定番土産。「パトッ Pathok」はエリアの名称）や、熱々に焼いた炭をジュッと入れて作るユニークなブラックコーヒー「コピ・ジョス」といった、地元で愛される名物も欠かせません。
質素な屋台「アンクリンガン」から伝説的なレストランに至るまで、ジョグジャカルタではジャワ料理の神髄に浸る、美味しく奥深い食体験が待っています。

Yogyakarta's food culture is a true reflection of its Javanese heritage, characterized by a distinct sweet and savory flavor profile.
The city's undisputed culinary icon is Gudeg, a tender, slow-cooked jackfruit stew that is a must-try for any visitor. Beyond this signature dish, the local scene is rich with famous foods like Sate Klathak, a unique mutton satay grilled on bicycle spokes and served with a savory broth, and the comforting, charcoal-fired Bakmi Jawa (Javanese noodles).
The experience is rounded out by beloved snacks like the sweet mung bean-filled Bakpia Pathok pastry, and the unique street-side tradition of Kopi Joss, a black coffee made memorable by the addition of a sizzling hot piece of charcoal.
