ウプサラ大学は15世紀に授業を開始した長い歴史を持つ大学です。豊かな歴史を持つ一方で最先端の研究を行っており、特に企業とも連携した生命科学・バイオテクノロジーの分野で世界をリードしています。
その他の分野の研究・教育水準も非常に高く、化学や物理学などの分野で多くのノーベル賞受賞者を輩出しています。政治学・国際関係学、哲学や神学といった人文社会科学の研究も盛んで、国内外の多くの学生に良質なカリキュラムを提供しています。

Uppsala University has long history, having begun its first classes in the 15th century. While deeply rooted in tradition, the university is also at the forefront of modern research — especially in the fields of life sciences and biotechnology, where it leads global innovation in collaboration with industry partners.

豊かな学生生活
ウプサラには「ネーション」と呼ばれる13の学生組織があり、多くの学生が所属します。ネーションは独自のレストラン、カフェを持っていて、学生が運営しています。ネーションでは「ガスク」と呼ばれる伝統的なディナーパーティー、クラブやコンサートなどのイベント、合唱やハイキング、ヨガなどのアクティビティに参加することができます。
もちろん留学生も所属することができ、イベントに参加したりネーションの運営するレストランのアルバイトをしたりすることで、学部では出会わない新しい仲間に出会うことができます。他では味わえないユニークな学生生活が魅力です。
A Vibrant Student Life
Uppsala has 13 student organizations known as nations, and most students belong to one of them. Each nation runs its own student-operated restaurants and cafes. They also host a wide range of events and activities, including traditional dinner parties called gasques, club nights, concerts, choir practices, hiking trips, and yoga sessions.
International students are welcome to join, and participating in events or working part-time at a nation-run restaurant is a great way to meet new people outside of your academic program. The nations offer a unique and enriching student experience that you won’t find anywhere else.

ウプサラはルンドと並ぶ大学街で、歴史を感じさせる場所になっています。ウプサラ大学は北欧最古の大学で、1477年に授業が開始されました。中心部にはかつて大学講堂だった建物を使った歴史博物館があり街や大学の歴史を学べます。
自然が豊かなのもこの街の良いところ。晴れた日には街を流れる川の川縁で多くの人が日なたぼっこをして過ごします少し郊外に足を伸ばすと湖や、整備された森のハイキングロードがあります。
また、首都のストックホルムにも電車やバスですぐ移動でき、スウェーデン最大の空港であるアーランダ空港にも近いため、気軽に旅行ができます。
豊かな歴史と自然に囲まれながら、ゆっくり過ごすこともアクティブに過ごすこともできるのがウプサラの特徴です。
Uppsala, along with Lund, is one of Sweden’s most prominent university towns where you can feel its long history. Uppsala University is the oldest university in the Nordic countries, with classes first held in 1477. In the city center, a former university lecture hall now houses a history museum where visitors can learn about the rich past of both the city and the university.
Another great feature of Uppsala is its rich natural surroundings. On sunny days, many people are relaxing by the river that runs through the city. You can easily go out of the city center and enjoy lakes and well-maintained hiking trails through the forest.
Uppsala also offers excellent access to travel, with convenient train and bus connections to the capital, Stockholm, and close proximity to Arlanda Airport, Sweden’s largest international airport.
Whether you prefer a laid-back lifestyle surrounded by history and nature or a more active way of life, Uppsala offers the best of both worlds.

スウェーデンにはFika（フィーカ）と呼ばれるコーヒー休憩の文化があります。ウプサラの街中にはおしゃれなカフェがたくさんあり、多くの人が友人や家族とスイーツを囲んでおしゃべりをしています。留学中にお気に入りのカフェを開拓するのもおすすめです。
Sweden has a culture of coffee breaks called Fika. Uppsala's city center is filled with stylish cafes where many people gather with friends or family to enjoy sweets and conversation. It would be nice to discover your favorite cafe during your stay.

ウプサラではスウェーデンならではの伝統行事を体験することができます。夏至祭や冬にあるルシア祭、春を迎えるバルボーリと呼ばれるお祭りが有名で、さまざまな形で参加し楽しむことができます。特に長い冬を乗り越えた後のバルボーリは大盛り上がりです。
In Uppsala, you can experience traditional Swedish events unique to the country. The Midsummer Festival, the Lucia Festival in winter, and the spring festival called Valborg are famous, and you can participate in and enjoy them in various ways. Especially, Valborg after long winter is a huge celebration.

ウプサラは空港や首都のストックホルムにも近いので、週末はどこかに出かける人も多いです。クリスマスなどの長期休暇の際にはヨーロッパを周遊する人もいます。ウプサラ大学のもう一つのキャンパスがあるゴッドランドも人気のスポットです。
Uppsala is close to the airport and the capital Stockholm, so many people go out somewhere on weekends. During long holidays like Christmas, some people tour Europe. Gotland, where Uppsala University has another campus, is also a popular spot.

私にとって海外留学は初めての経験でとても不安だったのですが、ウプサラは本当に居心地の良いところで、10ヶ月があっという間でした。歴史ある街並みや豊かな自然に囲まれて過ごす学生生活は、東京ではなかなか味わえないものでとても新鮮に感じました。
ウプサラには日本のようなサークルはないのですが、ネーションに参加したりキッチンをシェアする学生寮に住んだりすることで、留学生ともスウェーデンの学生とも仲良くなることができました。他の国から来た留学生と一緒にインターナショナルディナーをしたのが楽しかったです。
授業はペアワークやグループワークの課題が多く出ること、先生と生徒が対等な関係で授業に参加していることが印象的でした。学部の授業でも留学生が取れる英語の授業が多く自分の専門外の授業を自由に取れたのも楽しかったです。ウプサラで学生生活を過ごせてよかったです。
Studying abroad in Uppsala was my first time living overseas, and I was very nervous at first. But Uppsala turned out to be such a comfortable and welcoming place that the 10 months flew by. Living in a city full of history and surrounded by beautiful nature was a completely new and refreshing experience — something I couldn’t easily find back home in Tokyo.
Although Uppsala doesn't have clubs and circles quite like in Japan, I was able to make friends with both international and Swedish students by joining a nation and living in a student dorm with a shared kitchen. One of my best memories was having international dinners with students from different countries — we shared food from our home cultures and had a great time together.
In class, I was impressed that they offer many pair or group assighments, and the way students and teachers interacted on equal footing. Even at the undergraduate level, there were many courses offered in English, so I had the chance to take classes outside of my major, which was really enjoyable.
I'm so glad I had the opportunity to spend part of my student life in Uppsala.
