This time, I researched about how the situations of the returnees have been changed from the past to now. Also I researched about some kinds of the special treatments for the returnees as I got some information from Akito last week. In past, “Returnees” have no good image by other Japanese people such as no respects and moreover they were recognized as outsider and clueless in every other aspect of Japanese life. It was much greater to be the member of baseball teams or the gangs than being the returnees and can speak good English. But for now, it has been changed a bit. Now, “returnees” is very envious people because of the reasons that they can spend some times in abroad and can speak foreign languages, also could get some special treatments. But on the other hand, the most important points that we people have to know in mind, is that they are not going outside by their own choice, they have to move to abroad because of their families decides. There are some ideas that returnees can get into school easier than other students. This idea comes because as it has shown in the figure below, for the returnees’ exam, the English exam scored higher than other subjects, or moreover they sometimes need to take only three subjects for entrance exam. This actually makes bit easier to enter schools than other students. Also there is some actual number that shows returnees can get into schools easier than other normal Japanese students. For example, in 2012, the results of Toritsu Kokusai High School’s entrance exam were that 47/62 (over 70%) of the returnees passed the exam, but 120/303 (less 40%) of usual Japanese students passed the entrance exam. This evidenced that the returnees have some advantages to enter the school than other Japanese students. But as I said, which I got the idea from Akito last week, to be returnees is not their own choice, and they have lots of hardships. And what we have to notice most is that “special entrance exam for returnees” is not special privilege, there is the system, and it is because they need it. He taught me that the returnees have the knowledge but sometimes they cannot answer it in Japanese because they do not know the technical terms of the subjects even they can speak Japanese fluently. Also sometime, the contents of the subjects they study in abroad may different with Japanese study. So I noticed that “special entrance exam for returnees” is valid system for the returnees then.
