Presentation on Multicultural Supporter

Slide 2 Today I want to introduce about the supporter of multiculturalism in Japan. Last cycle, I was searching about the problem. And after that I thought there are a lot of problems which connect with Japanese society, which hasn’t multicultural yet. And it means that foreigners who live in Japan feel not comfortable, I think. So I think it is important to make Japan more comfortable country that some members in Japan should make Japanese society better. So this cycle, I want to research about the supporters which contribute multiculturalism. And I think the supporters would be NPO (Non Profit Organization), Company (Profit Organization), and Government. And as I search about these organization, I could find that each organization has own difficulty. And these are worried about it and try to resolve it. So when you listen my presentation, I want you to comparing these organization and thinking about Pros and Cons of these.Slide 3 First of all, I want to say about NPO and I was searching one specific NPO which is located in Tokyo and which focus on helping for young foreigners in Japan. Its name is Multicultural Center Tokyo. And the aim is “To create an inclusive society where every person is respected regardless of nationality, language and culture”. And it focuses on helping youth access high school in Japan especially.Slide 4

So, the activity that they are doing are follow; ①MCT provides an opportunity for immigrant children to learn Japanese and study other subjects on an everyday basis. ②MCT provides educational information for immigrant children and their families. For example, they are transferring children to junior high school or entering to high school. ③MCT holds volunteer-run Saturday classes providing children with opportunities to interact with community volunteers and receive individual attention in their studies. ④MCT disseminates information regarding Multiculturalism and education to the public.

Next, I want to say about the difficulty of NPO. I think it is not only this NPO’s problem, I think this difficulty is be worries about almost NPO. It is How to collect the money which is needed for actives. NPO is the head words of Non Profit Organization, so it means the main aim of them isn’t making money. But reality, they need money for activity. So I think whether NPO could be active for long periods, get sustainability, or not is depend on that NPO can have money always.

This NPO, MCT have 2 main supporters. One is company and the other is individual supporters.

First, about company. MCT say importantly about the CSR of company. It is said that recently many company tend to focus on CSR. And this situation make new business styles. So MCT wants to use CSR as their source of collecting money.

These are supporter company of MCT; GAP Japan, USB Financial Group, Mitsubishi USB, Goldman Sachs Japan and Dentsu. As you know, they are said Big Company in Japan.

On the MCT website, which for supporter company, is said that we are 認定NPO. So it means that if you donate us, you can reduce the Company Tax. There are the Law of NPO in Japan. And thanks to its Laws, you can be taken benefit that reducing the amount of taxes.

I think that MCT implied that you can receive benefit not only reducing tax but also collecting nation’s interests. So it is CSR and it could help your company.

Second, about individual supporter. It can be separated two main parts. On is donating money and the other is donating Goods. This NPO provides mainly education, so the goods are like text book, stationary , school uniform and so on.

Second of all, I want to say about Company which connect with multicultural in Japan. This is Nail Art Company and all employees are refugees in Japan. Its name is Arusha. And this Boss of company is woman. I could Primary Research, I was meeting and feeling her passion and interviewing directly for her.

So what do you think why the boss choose the Nail Art for refugees? There are some reasons follow; ①High profitability, it is a characteristic of the Beauty salon Business, ②Future prospects, Nail Art is popular among people in Japan.③Consumption articles, the costumer will change their nails when nails become long. So it means customer will use repeatedly. ④Not rooting goods/ it needs few stocks. Compare to the food shop, or restaurant. It is clearly to understand. And the goods are all small.

Their activities are mainly 3 parts; one is Nail Art and the second is English Schools, final is shopping site.

About Nail Art.

It is presented by Refugees. All employee are foreigners. And the Only Nail artist who could get a permission from boss can do a job.The Boss teaches refugees how to making nail beautiful. (how to nailing) And when I heard her taking, Boss said like I want refugees to have own ability for doing job and have own ability for alive.

But, what we are doing is Not PLAY but Business. So it means that there is customer who paid money for us.

About English schools.

It is also presented by refugees teacher. And Arusha don’t have place of teaching. Teacher will go and visit directly to the student/ customer. I think this style is interesting because it is need not for student to move. Almost students are Businessman so they are busy. And it makes also benefit for Arusha, because Arusha don’t need make any place to teach them. So it means that Arusha can cut costs.

It is seemed importantly that how to reduce the cost of doing jobs. Because Arusha isn’t big company.

The teacher who can do a job is the refugee who could pass the TOIEC test. It need over 95 % of score.

Third of all, Arusha is doing the shopping site.

They sell Accessories, small goods, Interior goods, Furniture, or Clothes and so on. And these goods are donated one. Many supporters give Arusha for free. It can be bought on the internet. I think, as I mentioned above, it is also need not place. So Arusha can cost cut.The profit are used for donating for refugees in Japan.

Next, I want to say about what is difficult for employing Refugees.

The boss said that generally, African Refugees are difficult to get and find jobs in Japan. And this Nail Art company is also hard to give jobs for African Refugees. You can see same situation. She said that African characteristic isn’t match Nail Art, and other job in Japan. Nail Art job needs to; High concentration, Manual dexterity which means skillful with fingers, and Caring mind. Unfortunately, however, almost Africans don’t have these things. And she said, it was interesting for me, they couldn’t be educated when they were young so they cannot concentrate. Their concentration ability is same as Children. Before I heard this comment, I thought that concentration is needed only academic things, Nail Art is not academic things. So after that I felt importance of education for children.

And she said the person who can do nail for customer in her company are only Myanmar.

So final, I want you to compare NPO and Company. These are my thinking. The biggest matter of NPO is collecting activity money, I think. NPO relys on donations by individual or by organization, company. It means that if the supporter of NPO stopped donating, it happens that NPO cannot active which they would like to do. And also, how easy to collect money is depend on the law of NPO. If I stand the company side, I think I tend to donate more 認定NPO than non-認定 NPO.

So I think, to collect money and to make the active of NPO sustainable, firstly NPO should try to become 認定NPO.

Company, this organization’s main aim is making profit. So it means that to compare NPO, the activity of Company is more sustainable. However, company is not supporting organization, so even if the week/foreigner wants to help by company, company cannot easy to change its plan and give them kindness.

How to give African Refugees jobs which fits to their characteristics? Or what job is good for them?

• “Firstly, give a chance to be educated. And then their concentration ability will become better, and then help to find the job.” This person thinks that it is important to improve their concentration.

•This person think Agriculture is fit for African because it need not care, compare to Nail Art Work. And also she mention that Baby Sitter is also hittable.
