I am going to research about the Japanese returnees which means Kikokushijyo in Japanese for this time. So for the first research, I have looked about that what kinds of the problems do they have and what ideas they have. Also I have found some detail about the Japanese returnees. The feature characteristics of the Japanese returnees are that they are bilingual, bicultural, feeling comfortable with West society. Then I found about the problems that they feel in school such as feeling the gap with their own ideas when they came back to Japan even it is their own original country and culture. So when they feel it is particularly in the school. It is because that, in West countries’ societies, it is good to be active and say their own ideas or opinions, but in Japan it is opposite. In Japanese society people tend to be hesitating in the class, and not to be so active is good thing. So the Japanese returnees particularly children feel the struggling.
In the article “Schools aim to cultivate returnee students’ ‘second culture’”, there is the word that explains the Japanese returnees as “economic commodity”. It was because that there was the big economic boom in 1980s in Japan, and there was a great interest to internationalism at that time.
In the short conversation in the Japanese as multicultural society class, I have got some ideas. I am going to focus on more about the issues with separating the problems in society and in school, and when they moved to foreign country and how log was it. Also I would like to research more about what kinds of cultural gap there are as my partners of small conversation suggested to me. Particularly I may research specifically the point of school life of the Japanese returnees.
