Last week, I researched about the linguistic gap, and that articles was the example of Hamamatsu in Shizuoka prefecture. This week, I focused on the condition of foreign workers in Hamamatsu.
First of all, I chose the article about financial aid for Brazilian and Peruvian students at local unlicensed school in Hamamatsu. It said that the city of Hamamatsu decided to provide up to 10,000 yen each to 745 students to help them buy textbooks in the academic year starting in April in 2009. Increasing number of children has come to go to schools which they can learn their mother tongue, so this system is good for them, i think. I would like to research whether this aid has been continued now.
Second, I read the article about the issues between foreigner and residents in Hamamatsu. In the article, Hamamatsu has the largest number of Brazilian, who have settled and found jobs in factories, so the city help them by providing language programs, translating key documents, employing interpreters to help people navigate administrative issues and signposted in Portuguese. The article said, however, it was "On The Surface". There are various kinds of problems like the friction between foreigner and residents by the difference of each culture, education and low wages. I think these problems are so complex and difficult to solve, but we have to consider what to do for making good relationship with them. Moreover, this article was BBC's, so it was more objective than the article which Japanese wrote.
