I interviewed Angela Manuel-Davis. Angela is an amazing, inspirational SoulCycle instructor. Angela uses spirituality in her classes. Her classes are very inspirational because it really teaches you how to be confident and she challenges you to become the best you. Angela has been an athlete since she was 5 years old. Her dad played professional baseball, so sports has always been a big part of her life. Angela got a scholarship from Oral Roberts University in track and field and that was when she decided to major in health and exercise science. After her professional track career, she got into coaching and training. After that chapter of her life, she decided to motivate and speak inspirationally through fitness.
Angela incorporates spirituality into her classes by bringing faith to her riders. You could have faith in anything. Something that she says in classes is, “How you ride your bike is how you live your life.” That has really stuck with me because she is basically saying that, if you push yourself on the bike, you push yourself in the the real world. But if you ride the bike not willing to take risk and be challenged, you don’t challenge yourself in the real world. So I think of it as how you do something reflects on how you live your life.
Angela loves her job because of her riders, wearing casual clothes all day and the chance it gives her to try new music. Angela motivates people to stay healthy with her classes. Angela’s classes aren’t about losing weight but about having longevity, because if you stay healthy you can have longevity.
The people that motivate Angela to do her job everyday are her kids, husband and parents. But she said her why is what really motivates her because “your why should make you cry.” She means the WHY should be why you do the things you do. Angela gave the example of her kids being her why. Angela’s least favorite part of her job is waking up early because she used to wake up late and go to bed late. But her job has flipped that for her. She does different amounts of classes a day though.
One of Angela’s favorite quotes is, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere“ by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Angela loves the quote because it relates to what is happening today. She believes that everyone is an activist in their own way. Angela has been a big inspiration for me because she is pushing me to be my greatest self and find the inner me.
