New Jersey Student Climate Challenge

The New Jersey Student Climate Challenge highlights the role youth can play in addressing the climate crisis. The initiative builds on New Jersey’s work to increase climate literacy in young people across the state, including its first-in-the-nation effort to incorporate climate change education across all K-12 state academic standards. The Challenge is designed for students to participate through their school with a teacher or club advisor as mentor so their projects can be linked to their school learning experiences. Students are encouraged to team up and complete a school or community project to address a cause or impact of climate change. The team then creates a short digital story video to highlight what they have accomplished. Schools with first, second and third place winners in a middle and a high school category will receive a grant ranging from $500 to $2,500 to advance their climate education initiatives. Students will receive an awards certificate and commemorative gift. The students and their teachers will be recognized at an awards ceremony hosted by the Drumthwacket Foundation with the New Jersey Governor and First Lady.

Upcoming Information Sessions

Two identical virtual Information Sessions are scheduled in December. The sessions will provide an overview of the Challenge including the program timeline, resources, and submission requirements:

Imagine a Franklin Student being one of the 5 Grand Prize Winners: $5000 scholarship or grant to start a business.

Or a Franklin teacher being one of the Five teachers to win a $1000 cash prize for above and beyond instruction with Your Voice is Power.

We can do this!

Your Voice is Power provides both students and teachers an introduction to computer science through a real-world exploration of how music, computer science, and entrepreneurship can be tools to advance racial justice. Built-in collaboration with Yellow, students channel their learning into an original remix of Pharrell’s song Entrepreneur – a celebration of Black culture – using Python computer code. New this competition year, students can also use computer code to remix Alicia Key’s song, Underdog, and Khalid’s New Normal as part of their original creations.
