Grade 5

Quarter 4

Welcome to the Grade 5 Family Focus Page Quarter 4

Below are listed the I Can statements for each unit in Quarter 4. These help guide teachers in our planning as we prepare lessons knowing what students need to be doing by the end of the unit. This gives you an idea of things that you can work on at home or talk about.

Quarter 4

Unit 8:

What students are expected to do:

  • I can recognize the x-axis and y-axis on a coordinate grid.

  • I can identify an ordered pair and graph the point on a coordinate plane.

  • I can solve problems involving ordered pairs.

  • I can name shapes that belong in different categories (e.g., quadrilaterals, parallelograms, rectangles, triangles) based on the attributes of the shapes.

  • I can name a hierarchy of shapes based on their attributes.

Unit 9:

What students are expected to do:

  • I can divide whole numbers with up to 2-digit divisors using place value strategies, including rectangle models and partial quotients.

  • I can explain my computation.

  • I can multiply and divide decimals to hundredths using concrete models, drawings, and place value methods.

  • I can estimate an answer, and explain the placement of the decimal point, when multiplying or dividing with decimals.

  • I can model fractions as division and explain how fractions represent division.

  • I can divide a unit fraction by a whole number and explain what it means.

  • I can divide a whole number by a unit fraction and explain what it means.

  • I can solve problems involving division with whole number and unit fractions.

  • I can explain the standard algorithm for multiplication of multidigit numbers.

  • I can use the standard algorithm for multiplication.

  • I can divide whole numbers with up to 2-digit divisors using place value strategies, including rectangle models and partial quotients.

  • I can explain my computation.

  • I can convert from one unit of measure to another in the same system.

  • I can solve problems that require me to convert measurement units.
