Grade 1 Quarter 1

Below are listed the I Can statements for each unit. These help guide teachers in our planning as we prepare lessons knowing what students need to be doing by the end of the unit. This gives you an idea of things that you can work on at home or talk about.

Quarter 1

Unit 1:

What students are expected to do:

  • I can count to 75 from any number.

  • I can read numbers to 75.

  • I can write a number given a set of objects.

  • I can write numbers to 75.

  • I can identify a bundle of 10 ones as “ten.”

  • I can represent numbers 11 to 19 as a 10 and ones.

  • I can represent numbers 20 to 90 as tens and zero ones.

  • I can represent numbers to 75 with tens and ones.



Unit 2:

What students are expected to do:

  • I can use objects to model and explain addition and subtraction.

  • I can draw pictures to model and show addition and subtraction.

  • I can write a number sentence to model and show addition and subtraction.

  • I can write a related addition and subtraction number sentence for a representation.

  • I can use counting strategies (counting all, counting on, counting back) to solve addition and subtraction.

  • I can add and subtract fluently within 10 using the plus/minus 0, 1, 2 strategy.



Unit 3:

What students are expected to do:

  • I can compare the lengths of 3 objects.

  • I can compare the lengths of two objects by using a third object to compare them.

  • I can order 3 objects based on length in multiple ways.
