Grade 5

Quarter 1

Welcome to the Grade 5 Family Focus Page Quarter 1

Below are listed the I Can statements for each unit in Quarter 1. These help guide teachers in our planning as we prepare lessons knowing what students need to be doing by the end of the unit. This gives you an idea of things that you can work on at home or talk about.

We have a GREAT resource coming that will be linked at the bottom of each list of I Can statements. This will be coming soon.

Quarter 1

Unit 1:

What students are expected to do:

  • I can use my knowledge of whole number place value to explain standard algorithm.

  • I can multiply using partial product notation.

  • I can multiply a multi-digit number by a 1 digit number using the standard algorithm.

  • I can estimate and assess the reasonableness of the product.

  • I can use multiplication to help me understand division and check for accuracy

  • I can use a visual model to demonstrate division

  • I can use equations and the properties of operations to solve division problems

  • I can solve a division problem and interpret the remainder as a fraction

  • I can solve a division problem and determine what to do with a remainder

Unit 2:

What students are expected to do:

  • I can show that in a multi-digit number each place value is 10 times less than the one to its left and 10 times greater than the one to its right.

  • I can express powers of ten using exponents.

  • I can compare two powers of ten expressed exponentially.

  • I can use parentheses to express a quantity.

  • I can simplify expressions using order of operations.

  • I can evaluate an expression that uses parentheses.

  • I can read decimals to the thousandths place in various forms

  • I can write decimals to the thousandths place using various forms

  • I can compare two decimals to thousandths.

  • I can interpret math expressions and equations that include parentheses.

  • I can simplify expressions that include parentheses and use order of operations.

  • I can compare two expressions by evaluating them.

  • I can round decimals to any place.

  • I can determine how to round based on the situation.

  • I can estimate the sum or difference when adding and subtracting decimals.

  • I can use estimates to check the reasonableness of my computations.

  • I can use my understanding of place value to add or subtract decimals to the hundredths.

  • I can identify the similarities and differences between adding and subtracting decimals and adding and subtracting whole numbers.
