Below are listed the I Can statements for each unit in Quarter 3. These help guide teachers in our planning as we prepare lessons knowing what students need to be doing by the end of the unit. This gives you an idea of things that you can work on at home or talk about.

Unit 6:

What students are expected to do:

  • I can find common denominators.

  • I can create equivalent fractions with common denominators.

  • I can add and subtract fractions, including mixed numbers.

  • I can create a line plot to show fractional parts to eighths.

  • I can use data on a line plot to solve problems.



Unit 7:

What students are expected to do:

  • I can multiply a fraction by a whole number or fraction.

  • I can create story contexts for problems involving multiplication of fractions and whole number or fractions.

  • I can multiply fractional side lengths to find the area of rectangles.

  • I can reason about the product size when multiplying fractions.

  • I can explain how the product size is influenced by the factors.

  • I can use visual models to represent fraction multiplication.

  • I can create a line plot to show fractional parts (½, ¼ and ⅛ )

  • I can use data on a line plot to solve problems.

  • I can add, subtract, multiply and/or divide fractions from a line plot to solve problems.

  • I can model fractions as division and explain how fractions represent division.

  • I can divide a unit fraction by a whole number and explain what it means.

  • I can divide a whole number by a unit fraction and explain what it means.
