Poetry Slam

Poetry Slam 2023

During the annual Poetry Slam hosted by Creative Writing, students compete with original poems and read them for everyone in the program. This year there were 18 individual participants, as well as two instructors, Regis Polygon, and the Logic class. Prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The 1st place winner is also awarded the coveted Cherry Cola Crown. The final award, the Yukon, is given to the funniest poem.

"Dear Miranda"

Dear Miranda. You are the most important person I've ever met.

And not in a naive kind of way but I love you

Y mi amor trasciende todo lenguaje porque te amo

I'm so in love I forget about my flaws.

I'm slim, but you give me substance

I'm tall but you bring me back to earth

I'm scared, but you give me tranquility

I hurt, but you give me relief

I'm broken, but you heal me.

I'm flawed, but you're perfect.

I love because, because I'm weak, and I'm fragile. Yet by the look in those sparkly brown eyes, I know you'd never let me fall and break. Oh, please never, never let me go.

Because it hurts to be without you. It's as if nothing is real until I can tell you. Nothing feels whole until I know you approve. No movie is watched or art appreciated, no joke funny, or breath breathed until I know our tangled souls agree.

So please Miranda let me dare to love you.
