Yes, it is time to talk about Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word! For this month’s TechBits, let's take a look at some of the best shortcuts and tips to know while using Microsoft Word!
Delete entire words at a time
Let's start off with something that I recently learned. I have been deleting words incorrectly! One can always use the delete key on a Mac or the backspace on a PC to delete some characters at a time or just hold each respective button down to delete a long sentence. However, you can delete whole words at a time by clicking Option+Delete on a Mac and Ctrl+Backspace on a PC when the cursor is placed after a word you want to erase.
There is a quick command on the keyboard that brings you to the window that allows you to add quick hyperlinks to your documents. On Pc’s press Ctrl+K and on a Mac press Command+K and it will bring you to the window shown below!
An amazing way to find any word you want quickly in your document is to go to the “search in document menu” You can hover your mouse over to it and click on it in the upper-righthand corner, or you can press Ctrl+F on a PC or Command +F on a mac to invoke it. However, there is another function!
Click the drop-down arrow on the Find menu’s magnifying glass and click Replace to automatically replace a certain word or phrase with a different word or phrase you specify. In my example below, I chose to change every instance of the word “The” to “Thy” instantly.
Smart Lookup
Word offers a way to look up information that does not require you to use a google/bing search. You start by highlighting a word or phrase you would like to look up and then right-click it and select smart lookup. A sidebar on the right will appear giving you the top search results!
