Two types

    • Each paragraph has one cause and an effect

Sequential Order

Describes a process and arranges information in a step-by step sequence

Description

Uses sensory details by using visual imagery

Order of Importance

Putting the most important information first

• What is important depends on your audience

• Know who you are writing for so that you provide information that is important to your audience

Problem and Solution

Divides information into two main sections:

• problem - convinces the reader there is a problem

• solution - writer provides a solution to the problem

Compare and Contrast Organization

Effective when a reader is familiar with a topic and arranges information according to how two or more things are similar to or different from one another. Can have two types:

• each paragraph describes the similarities/differences of one factor, with a different paragraph for each factor

• create two main paragraphs, one that describes similarities and one that describes differences

Logical Order

Moves from general ideas to specific examples in a logical manner by introducing each idea and then giving supporting examples. It allows a reader to easily reach the same conclusion as the writer.

Classification

Breaks down a large subject into categories and shows the reader how categories are connected to each other or the main idea

Proposition/Support or Persuasive Organization

Presents an idea or belief firmly and gives the reader an idea of what will be presented and usually is a "call to action" to support an idea or a solution to a problem.
