Descriptive details

There are many ways descriptive details can be included in writing. It can help describe, persuade, illustrate or demonstrate.

Sensory Detail

• Sight, sound, smell, touch, taste

• Writing that incorporates vivid, sensory detail is more likely to engage and affect a reader

Characterization

• Process of describing a characters appearance or action

• Causes readers to connect with the character on a personal level and creates realistic characters

  • how a character behaves

  • how a character speaks

  • how a character looks

  • how a character thinks

Observational Writing

• Showing a reader the people, places, events, and/or objects through the use of specific detail

Showing vs Telling

• "Telling" is the process of creating text that does not speak to the imagination of the reader

• "Showing" incorporates vivid descriptive detail in order to help the reader make assumptions about a character

Simile

• Comparison of two things and makes a connection between the two using "like" or "as"
