All Chance Phelps wanted to do was defend his country. He was loved by many and will forever be remembered. In “Taking Chance,” Col. Mike Strobel has the honor of taking Chance Phelps, a fallen Marine, back home to his family. You get to experience what it’s like and how many people truly are affected when they witness am escort bringing a fallen Marine, Chance Phelps, back home to his family.
Although this HBO movie didn’t have any well-known actors, the actors did a pretty good job portraying the characters in this movie. Kevin Bacon did a great job portraying Colonel Mike Strobel. In "Taking Chance," Strobel was a serious guy who always seemed to be sad. Bacon played that role great!
I think when most people think of a veteran, they think of a more serious person who doesn't like sharing their feelings, and someone who is more often sad-looking than they are happy looking. I think right there is the explanation of Colonel Mike Strobel, and Bacon showed that personality through his acting.
In my opinion, the characters are pretty easy to understand. All the actors in this movie who portrayed a veteran did a good job showing someone more serious and stern-looking in their acting. When people see a veteran in their uniform or suit, I think they feel thankful. But then there's also a part of them that thinks, ‘Man, I wonder what they have been through,’ or, ‘Have they been in a war?’ It’s human nature to wonder some of these things when we see a veteran.
In "Taking Chance," there are multiple times when Colonel Mike Stroble is somewhere in his uniform, and people look at him, with that look of wonder on their faces. You can tell that the actors playing those people have actually been in that position before. Almost everybody probably has, so I think we can all relate to that situation, and the actors did a good job portraying the role.
At some points in the movie, I’ll admit, I got lost. I don’t know if I just got bored with what was happening or what. For that reason, I believe the suggested audience would be mostly anybody, but it depends on what you like. Younger kids may have a bit of a hard time focusing, but it might be good for them to learn what goes on, and how it affects a lot of people when someone on active duty dies.
There really is no action, or no real storyline to the movie. If you are someone who needs an action movie, this might not be the right movie for you. However, I think it is a good movie to open people’s perspectives. What I mean by that is, before watching this movie, I’ve never really thought about what happens to people in wars when they died. It didn’t really matter much to me, to be honest. If anything, all I thought they did was have a funeral.
But now that I have watched this movie, my thoughts have changed. Now I know what the process is when a member of the military dies when on active duty. And it is a hard long process. No, it’s not so much physically hard, it’s mentally hard for all the people traveling along with the body of the lost veteran.
After traveling along with the body and getting all those sad, wonderous looks from strangers, you have to see the reaction of the family of the lost veteran, which I can’t even imagine.
For me, this is not the kind of movie that you re-watch. I watched it once, that’s all I need, and I will probably never watch this movie again. I enjoyed the acting, and I thought it was good, but there was no true storyline. There was no action, or real cheesy drama.
I would rate “Taking Chance,” three out of five elk. If you prefer action-filled movies with blood, or a mystery, this might not be the movie for you. If you are interested in war, and don’t mind a slower-paced movie, this just might be what you have been looking for.
