The Sonic the Hedgehog series has been kinda slow lately (pun kind of intended). Ever since the jump to 3D, the Sonic series has been mostly mediocre. Sure, we did have a few gems like Generations and debatably Colors, but most of the time, it wasn’t that good. But during the Sonic the Hedgehog 25th anniversary livestream, they announced Sonic Mania.
Having played it myself since it came out, I can safely say that this is the best Sonic game to date. It perfectly recreates the feel of the original 3 Sonic games, with its fast game play, beautiful pixel art, and spectacular music. But surprisingly, this game was barely made by Sonic Team. A ROM hack programmer, a YouTuber music remixer, and an obscure company making a large fan game were recruited into making Sonic Mania, and it’s kinda sad when the fans of Sonic understand Sonic better than SEGA themselves.
