Do you remember the salt dough volcanoes that we made on Mad Science Day? Well, the second half of the Autumn term got off to an 'explosive' start when we erupted our volcanoes! We first painted the salt dough to give our creations a realistic look and then we created lava! We learned in Science that some substances have a chemical reaction when they come into contact with each other with some rather fun results. We added together a mixture of red paint (for colour) washing up liquid (for fizz), Bicarbonate of Soda ( salt), vinegar (acid) and warm water (heat). When the acid, mixed with the salt and warm water, the reaction caused Carbon Dioxide gas to inflate the bubbles from the washing up liquid. The mixture fizzed over the top of our volcano which looked like an eruption! Boom!
During our PSHE lessons, we have been learning about how to be a good friend. We talked about the qualities of a friend and created a friendship flower. We even learned a friendship dance that we performed with our buddies.
Year 4 Friendship day. Scroll through the photos to see what we did....
This half term, we have started a new computing topic all about coding using a programming platform called 'Scratch'. The coding instructions are designed like puzzle pieces that fit together to create a program for a sprite. This week we have been learning how to program our sprite to dance and how to change the background of our program. Look at our creations.....
This half term, we are combining our Geography, Art and English skills to produce a diary entry of a superhero rescue from a naturally occurring phenomenon. We are taking details from our learning about earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and avalanches and using them as the scene of a rescue by a superhero that we have created. We have designed our own costume and thought carefully about our super powers. Here we are creating a wordbank of interesting vocabulary for our diaries. Watch this space for our Superhero costumes, maps of the rescue area and our top copied diaries. Coming soon.....
This week, some of us created posters to explain why we would make a good School Councillor or an Eco Rep. Today we presented ourselves and had a class vote. Everyone presented to a very high standard and we were very impressed with the posters and personal qualities of each candidate. The votes are in and our new councillors have been chosen. Take a look at some of our lovely posters.
This week in Mrs Reynolds' maths group, we have started to look at how to multiply and what it means. One of the best ways to visualise multiplication is by using an array. We threw a dice twice, wrote a multiplication sum using the numbers rolled and then created an array to illustrate our multiplication sum. We could then count the rows or columns by skip counting to find a total. Look at our arrays....
Today was Children in Need day. We all came to school in our non-uniform and lots of us had something spotty or Pudsey related. We learned how the BBC Children in Need funds go to help children less fortunate than ourselves. We have done maths and colouring activities and we even took part in the Joe Wickes Quiz and exercise - a - thon!! Look how much energy we had!! We scored 8/8 on the quiz too!
We had an amazing afternoon making Christmas Crafts with our grown-ups today. We made a jolly Christmas Gnome from cardboard tube and felt and then turned our hand to a tissue paper Christmas Wreaths. Use the arrows to scroll through the presentation to see how well we did...
This half term we have been learning all about how sounds are made and how it travels. We know that sound is made by a source that vibrates. This vibration causes the air around the source to vibrate. As the air molecules move and vibrate, they bash into each other and transmit the vibration from air molecule to air molecule which makes a sound wave. When this waves goes into our ear, it creates an electrical message which our brain understands as sound. In these pictures, we are investigating how to change the volume (make sounds louder and quieter) and Pitch ( mke sounds higher and lower) of different instruments.
Mrs Reynolds' Maths Group have also been looking at division this term. We know that dividing means to 'share' out but we have also been learning that division can mean to 'group' items into equal sized groups. We used counters to put our totals 'into groups of' what we were dividing by...Look at how well we did...
Our PE unit this half term has been Dance. We have learned how to performa set sequence of steps, we have choreographed our own steps to 16 beats of music and we have learned how to dance in 'Canon' - like a Mexican wave! We made our own Superhero/Villain Masks as a costume and we performed our dances with confidence and professionalism. Well done Year 4.
Today was Christmas Dinner Day. The tables were laid with a Christmas theme and the festive music played as we ate our delicious Turkey with all the trimmings followed by Chocolate Cake and a Cracker! Let the festivities begin!
Thanks to our wonderful PA, we had a great time watching the pantomime of Aladdin. " On no you didn't...." " Oh yes we did!!"
