Welcome the class
Begin each day with a community circle.
Everyone sits in a circle facing each other. Can pass around a “talking stick” for the speaker to use. Start the day with ‘something I am looking forward to this year’
Talk about yourself – hobbies, family, etc.
Special things about the year ahead, ideas, etc.
Throughout the day be sure to take photos of students ‘My first day of Year _’
Take your class for a tour of the school. Use this as a time to establish your expectations for lining up, moving to specialist classes and make clear ‘Out of Bounds’ areas.
Look at the signage developed through SWPBS – discuss and set expectations as outlined on signage.
Explain the token system and begin rewarding them – free and fast!
Children to draw different events during their holidays, on a few jigsaw pieces.
Discuss School Values:
Be a Learner, Be Responsible Be Respectful, Be Safe. Discuss what they mean as appropriate to the needs of your students.
Students discuss key words for Mission Statement and put on sticky notes
Discuss your normal classroom procedures - lining up, rubbish in bins, tidy bag room, use of diaries & reading expectations, monitors, laptop use etc.
Organise student materials and discuss how to care for these as well as the classroom. sorting books etc.

Lined: Reader's notebook (yellow), writing (blue), working with words (pink)
