Readers Workshop - Reading a good fit book and using post it notes to identify Wow Words.
Students given sticky notes, asked to write one statement per note in answer to the question: ‘What Makes A Great Teacher?’
Display these sticky notes on a large whiteboard. While grade works on drawing a “Teacher” in their nominated book, small groups go out to the board and categorise the sticky notes. When everyone has had a turn, whole class comes together and decides on a suitable heading for each category. Students then write these teacher qualities around the outside of their pictures.
Grades Prep – 2: Same process as above, but students answer the question orally and teacher writes them on the board, putting them into categories as he/she writes. Accept each suggestion then, at the end, invite the students to help you think of one term to cover each categorised group. (If this is too hard for your students, then you lead by saying something like….Do you agree that all these things really mean “uses good manners”, and write that heading accordingly.
