You can create beams, struts and rafters that create a frame by tightly rolling newspaper into neat long sticks. Keep your tightly rolled sticks from uncurling using masking tape. Make a number, or groups of sticks of similar lengths to start with. Fill the space between your beams with 'walls' of newspaper. Create windows using cellophane or thin plastic acetate found in everyday packaging goods.
There are many applications to this technique and you will soon find that many options present themselves. Below you see examples of playground elements made from tightly rolled newspaper some of which even have a kinetic function:
For example: The disk swing actually swings, the flying fox seat actually moves. At home, my daughter and I made a marble run from consumer waste and masking tape one weekend. Find ways to explore and discover new ways of building strength and functionality in your structures. Have fun.
What do you want to make today?
A house, a playground? A shop? A marble run? Or even a shoe?
