Multiplication

Multiplication

Multiplication is introduced into the Victorian Curriculum at Level 2. Times tables are not learnt by rote in the Inquiry Centre, as they do not promote multiplicative thinking or problem-solving skills. We do explore multiplication in many ways, however, including:

- As repeated addition: 4 x 4 is the same as 4 + 4 + 4 + 4

- Using skip counting: 4 x 4 is the same as 4, 8, 12, 16.

Online Resources

Before times tables are learnt (even at home), students must be able to:

- Skip count by 2s, 4s and 5s

- Count on

- Double

- Group in tens

- Model and solve simple multiplication and division problems
