Identify which number is bigger or smaller
Activity: Use number cards (UNO or a normal deck with the face cards removed) and play with a partner. Turn one card each over at the same time and decide which is bigger. The person with the bigger card keeps both. The winner has the most cards left at the end.
Practise recognising small groups of dots without counting them. Ask your child if they can explain how they saw the dots. It's important to practise this every day!
Activity: use a dice, the video above, dominos or even dots drawn on paper. Show them for a few seconds, then hide them and ask your child how many dots they saw. Children can draw how they saw the dots.
If you have this game or a similar board game you can play it at home to practise subitising, Counting and turn taking
Activity: Choose a number card or roll a dice, get that many counters or objects. Compare the size of different collections you have counted, which one is bigger or smaller?
Use a numberline to practise counting forwards and backwards
Activity: Play with a partner and share one counter/game piece and start in the middle of your numberline. One player is counting forwards (addition) and the other is counting backwards (subtraction). Roll a dice and move that many numbers in your direction, your partner rolls and moves the opposite way. The winner is the first person to reach the end of the numberline.
If you have dominoes at home there are lots of different activities you can complete to practise counting and subitising. Below are a few ideas
Make a picture with dominoes (eg the shape of a dog) how many dots does your picture have?
Something trickier: make a picture with 10 dots (or another number)
Roll two dice and find a domino that matches the number you rolled
Pull out a number card and find a domino that matches the number
Go around your house and find as many numbers as you can! Write them down and see if you can figure out why there are numbers there
Complete some activities on Mathletics. Your username and passwords is on the back of your reading log!
