Reading
Storytime
It would be fantastic to continue building a love of reading with your children! At school we read anywhere up to 5 books each day. It would be valuable to read numerous stories at home with your children throughout the day. These can be stories that you have already enjoyed together. If you are in need of new stories, Storyline Online is a great FREE resource with a variety of stories. Some of the stories have a teacher and/or parent guide outlining a range of games, conversations and activities that can be completed after listening.
Here are some stories that we would recommend and examples of activities that your children could complete to develop their reading strategies:
Comprehension
Here are some examples of questions to ask your child before, during and after reading a story to help them develop a good understanding of what they have read.
Codes
In Term 1, Foundation students have been working very hard on the first 26 codes! When they are reading during storytime, they can identify letters of the alphabet and the sounds that the letters can make.
Alternatively, 'Phonogram Sounds' is a free program that can be downloaded as an app on tablets and smartphones, where students can continue to practise the codes that they know.
Alphabet
Starfall is an online resource that helps students build their vocabulary of words starting with each letter of the alphabet. It assists students to explore the sounds that the letter can make at the start of words. Compatible with smartphones, iPads and tablets through an online search engine.
Reading Eggs
Foundation students have been using Reading Eggs during reading groups and should be able to navigate independently - may require assistance logging in.
Cut and paste
Students can use catalogues and old magazines to cut out the letters of the alphabet. They can find that letter as many times as possible and glue to a page. They may cut and paste pictures of items that start with that letter. Eg. Letter A poster - apple, apron, ant, etc.
