Audio recording and taking of photos and videos at school
There are a number of laws and departmental regulations relating to the taking of photos or recording of private conversations at school, including the Listening Devices Act 1984, the Summary Offences Act 1988, and Legal Issues Bulletins 35 and 42. The following rule at Wagga High is based on these laws and regulations, as well as the school’s discipline code, and relates to the inappropriate use of equipment:
If a student uses at school [in the playground or in the buildings] a camera, a mobile phone with audio or image capture capabilities, or a video camera in such a way that :
interferes with the learning environment or the efficient operation of the school
impacts negatively on the reputation of the school
threatens or is likely to threaten the safety or wellbeing of a student or staff member
is against the law then the student will not only have the device confiscated, but he/she may be suspended.
