There is a saying that there are two certainties in life “death and taxes”. The new certainty in life is ongoing relentless change. The reach of new technologies is shifting professions and industries. Jobs that existed for centuries are disappearing and new jobs never imagined two decades ago are now prepared for in University and TAFE.
Recent regional and global economic shifts caused by prolonged drought, fires and pandemics create additional pressure for each of our students to not only choose wisely for their individual future, but to work consistently throughout those courses to build their future effectiveness through the knowledge, skills and capabilities developed.
High school is about transition from childhood through youth to adulthood. Just as infants we learnt to walk and speak, this stage of life is about acquiring skills needed for adult life. Some of the most important skills students need to develop is creativity, critical thinking, persistence, agility, collaboration, and resilience.
With a genuine commitment to support all students to achieve their aspirations as adult members of our local and global community, we need to work collectively: students, teachers, parents, industry and educational partners to support the development in each individual the mindset, skills and knowledge that prepare them for genuine success beyond school.
I strongly believe that students at Queanbeyan High School are equal to the best in our region and world. Each individual can make careers in any area of study they are passionate about. In choosing courses think about the fields of study that “hook” you as a learner. Turn up and engage in learning in a meaningful and authentic manner through deep learning experiences.
Just as the careers and industries are changing, teaching and learning is changing from what is called an Industrialised approach to education to one where each student is more closely known, valued and cared for and learning is designed to continually and positively impact attainment.
Our teachers are also learners and we are all working to improve our systems, skills and learning environments. We believe in high expectations in all aspects of our school as we strongly believe that each of you deserve the best possible preparation for your future.
Even though some may say the future is scary, I encourage us all to see the possibilities that it holds. I think now is one of the most exciting times in education for generations. Your voice can impact how our school evolves physically and socially through using your voice to offer ideas and solutions. We can all be proactive participants in creating and supporting the growth and development of our school and wider community.
I am very excited and privileged that you will be part of that future.
Yours Faithfully
