N4 Music Technology - Course Outline

The Music Technology National 4 course is split into 4 units.

DEVELOPING MUSIC TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

This unit looks at various music technology skills including using mics to record instruments/voices, using music capture software, editing recorded music, processing and mixing recorded music and creating high quality audio/video masters.

DEVELOPING AN UNDERSTANDING OF 20TH + 21ST CENTURY MUSIC

This unit looks at the history of music technology from the gramophone record player right through to modern DJ equipment, digital samplers and the rise of streaming services. You will look at a variety of modern music genres and explore the music and technological concepts that can be found in them. You will also take a look at the music industry, focusing on copyright and intellectual property.

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY CONTEXTS

In this unit you will be working on a variety of projects. This is detailed in the next few slides.

ADDED VALUE UNIT

This unit showcases all of the music technology skills and understanding gained over the previous 3 units. Pupils come up with their own music technology context from the list below and create their own project. Pupils have complete free choice in what they choose to create.

Sound design project

creating, adding and editing sound for film, animation, gaming etc

Multitrack recording  

Recording live music in the studio with instrumentalists and mixing and editing the recording

podcast/radio show 

writing and recording a podcast or radio show including dialogue, jingles, adverts, interviews, music and sound effects

creating digital music 

writing your own music using virtual instruments and various MIDI elements

audiobook 

recording an audio book and adding in music and sound effects
