About the Course
In Advanced Higher Art & Design, you can choose to work on one of the following:
A Design portfolio or
An Expressive portfolio
Your portfolio will be based on a personally chosen individual theme and having the choice to complete either Design or Expressive work allows you to specialise in the field that interests you the most.
Each portfolio has three sections:
Section 1 ‘practical expressive or design work’ which is worth 64 marks.
Section 2 ‘contextual analysis’ which is worth 30 marks.
Section 3 ‘evaluation’ which is worth 6 marks.
The portfolio is worth 100 marks. This is 100% of the overall marks for the course assessment. This portfolio will be sent away to the SQA for assessment.
Here you will develop personal autonomy, creativity and independent skills through exploration of your theme using different art materials, equipment and techniques.
Your theme will be personal to you and within it you will express and communicate your thoughts, feelings & ideas relating to this theme. When working through your theme you will show clear and in-depth exploration and development of an idea based on your research, before producing a final outcome. Areas of work can include:
Portraiture/Figure Composition
Landscape/the Built Environment
Fantasy & Imagination
Here you will develop personal autonomy, creativity and independent skills through exploration of your design brief using different materials, equipment and techniques.
You will write your own design brief, investigate it and then develop ideas that creatively problem solve the issues, opportunities and constraints of the brief. From this you will produce your final solution. Areas of work can include:
Fashion & Textiles
Product Design
Interior Design
Jewellery
Architecture
Graphics
Contextual Analysis
In both Design and Expressive portfolios you will complete Contextual Analysis research work. This will involve you investigating the working practices, creative approaches and influences of other artists or designers.
You will then select an artwork or design from your investigative research that influenced your own practical expressive or design work and produce a contextual analysis of this communicating your informed and supported opinions. The maximum word length of this is 2000 words.
Evaluation
You will complete the evaluation of your work on an SQA template. In this you will:
state your theme/brief and give a summary of your creative intentions
briefly explain how your contextual analysis relates to your practical work
evaluate the impact of your creative decisions and the effectiveness of your work.
