Music Technology

S3 Music Technology - Course Outline

Pupils who choose to take Music Technology in S3 will attend class twice a week. As well as the projects outlined on this page, pupils will study the music of the last decade, looking at key influencers, technologies and the music industry in general.

All pupils will have the opportunity to bank a National 4 qualification during S3 in Music Technology. If pupils continue with Music Technology in S4, the final two projects in S3 can be used towards their National 5 qualification.

Mini Mix Project

Pupils will work with a studio recording of a popular song and learn how to edit, mix and process all of the key instruments of modern music. This will result in a unique mix/edit of a popular song, giving pupils the skills to move onto their own recordings.

Music and Social media

Pupils will explore the the latest music trends on social media and will learn how to recreate them using music software. Pupils will take existing songs and edit them using Mixcraft to make them useable on short form video platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube (shorts).

Remix Project

Pupils will remix a song of their choice using a mix of original parts, new audio loops from the Mixcraft library and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). Pupils will create a unique remix of a song, using their skills to come up with an original piece of music.

Radio Show Project

Pupils will create their own radio show including jingles, presenter dialogue, adverts and top 5 countdown. Pupils will research the format of popular radio shows and create their own unique radio show in a style of their choosing. This project is based on the National 5 requirements for radio programme assignments.

Multitrack Recording

This project will teach pupils how to record instruments in a recording studio setting. Pupils will research drum kit, bass, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and vocal recoding and the appropriate mics for each instrument. The project will result in a band recording of a song, using the previously learned skills to edit, mix and process the audio to create a complete band mix.

Free Choice Project

Pupils will be given a rundown of all the music technology contexts they have covered this year, recapping the skills learned. Pupils will then select a context from the following list:

Sounds Design (foley) project

Podcast/Radio Show

Digital Music using MIDI

Audiobook

Commentary Video

Multitrack mix

Pupils can work solo or in groups and need to all submit a completed project of their own to complete the project.
