Music Technology

S2 Music Technology - Course Outline

Pupils at MGS attend Music Technology once a week in S1 and S2

Music Through the Decades

Pupils will create a 3 and a half minute piece of music made up of a song from each decade from the last 100 years. Pupils will need to research the genres of the decade, find the song they want on YouTube, download, import, edit, crossfade and save as an mp3.

EDM Project

Pupils will explore the EDM genre and look at how key artists create their music. This will allow them to compose their own EDM song using the loops available in Mixcraft. Pupils will focus on differentiating between verse, breakdown, build up, beat drop and chorus in their song structure.

Podcast Project

Pupils will create their own Podcast, writing scripts, recording audio, creating intro music using Mixcraft loops and importing music. Pupils can choose the topic of their podcast and will work in small groups with each pupil submitting their own version.

Sound Design Project

Pupils revisit sound design/foley and the art of recreating sound for film. Pupils will be offered a selection of videos with folders of sound effects available to them. Pupils must select appropriate sounds and synchronise them with the video. Pupils use submixes to focus on key sound effects, ambience and music.

Remix Project

Pupils will remix a song using a mix of original stems and new audio loops from the Mixcraft library. Pupils will need to follow the original structure of the song creating a verse, pre chorus and chorus for their remix.

Free Choice Project

Pupils will be given a rundown of all the music technology contexts they have covered this year, recapping the skills learned. Pupils will then select a context from the following list:

Sounds Design (foley) project

Podcast/Radio Show

Digital Music using MIDI

Audiobook

Commentary Video

Multitrack mix

Pupils can work solo or in groups and need to all submit a completed project of their own to complete the project.
