N4 - ABOUT THE COURSE
In National 4 Art & Design there are 3 units:
In this unit you will be given a design brief to work from. You will then investigate the brief and develop problem solving ideas that take account of all the design brief issues and constraints.
There is an element of choice in what design area you work within. Examples could be 3D Design (eg mask design) or 2D Design (eg graphics).
In this unit, you will also look at the work of 2 designers. Through analysing their designs you will develop your understanding of their working practices and the things that inspire them.
Again there is an element of choice in what area you work within. Choices can include Still Life, Portraiture or Fantasy & Imagination.
You will choose the theme of your work - that way your work is even more personal to you.
Once you have chosen your theme, you will complete investigative studies. Then from these studies, you will develop ideas for your final outcome.
In this unit, you will also look at the work of 2 artists. Through analysing their work you will find out what influences them, as well as develop your understanding of how they use their materials and techniques.
This unit has 2 elements:
You will look at your Design work, choose your best idea, make any changes before producing a Design Final Solution.
You will look at your Expressive work, choose your best idea, make any changes before producing an Expressive Final Outcome.
ASSESSMENT
These 3 units are completed over the course of the year and are marked internally by your teachers. You must pass all 3 units to achieve the course. However, they can also be verified by a visiting SQA marker.
