S1 COURSE
DESIGN WORK
This work will demonstrate focus on the Design Process with pupils working from first or second hand sources as appropriate. Pupils will gain understanding of the importance of a Design Brief/s to learn about the restrictions of working to this brief. Awareness of Target Markets and Design Issues should also be a focus as well as appropriate design/visual elements. Appropriate evaluating and appreciating of designers/design movements will form an integral part of work undertaken.
EXPRESSIVE WORK
Pupils will be encouraged to work from first hand sources where possible & appropriate, and work should centre around the subject matter, methods and materials of the artist. Pupils will be encouraged in self-expression with a range of media, using a variety of techniques, to produce individual expressive piece/s of work.
Appropriate visual elements will be studied, dependant on the nature of the activity undertaken.
Appropriate critical analysis of artists/art movements will form an integral part of work undertaken.
CLAY WORK
Clay work may be undertaken as part of either a Design or Expressive unit. The focus of this work is to develop clay handling and modelling skills where pupils will learn how to translate a 2D drawing into a 3D piece of work.
Formal Testing
In addition to Design and Expressive bodies of work, to further gauge knowledge & understanding, there will be additional formal Departmental tests taken under exam conditions:
An Expressive Drawing Test will be undertaken by pupils as part of the Expressive body of work
A Department test of Design/Design Process will be undertaken by pupils

Whilst all pupils will cover the same core elements, individual teacher/s may decide on the themes for their units of work. Subject areas covered in S1:
Still Life drawing and painting
Fantasy & Imagination – to explore creativity in an imaginative context working from first hand or gathered resources
2D Design
Introduction to clay modelling techniques

Pupils will gain experience of the following media:

Each body of work undertaken will focus on a number of visual elements appropriate to the individual task set.

Impressionism/Post Impressionism
Sculptors
Contemporary Packaging Design
Social/Cultural influences and contexts will be studied as part of the written units.
