Schools and those working most closely with children and young people can have a significant impact on preventing youth suicides and it is not as complex as you might think. Staff in schools will be doing much of what helps prevent suicides without even thinking about it.
Data gathered from our school staff has shown that around 40% of respondents have been involved in supporting at least one pupil with suicidal thoughts or behaviours.
School is an important part of a child or young persons life, however this is a shared responsibility across our entire communities and includes pupils, parents, community organisations and other statutory services.
Activities that help prevent youth suicides come under three main categories; Prevention, Intervention and Postvention.
There are a wide range of great resources available on this subject. These pages will attempt to capture the key learning from these resources and will reference some of the best ones we've found for optional additional reading.
