The importance of the student counselling can be seen on the student's, school's and the community's level. The aim of student counselling is to guide the student through the comprehensive school and all the way to the further studies. It aims to support the students in their studies and make sure that the education is effective.
Student counselling is a link between the school, work life, further studies and society. The subject can be seen as a way of promoting equality and participation.
More information about student counselling can be found in Finnish in our school specific curriculum https://ops.edu.hel.fi/ressun-peruskoulu/
During the 8th and 9th grade student participates in a work experience week (TET). Student will look for a place where they will complete the practice. More information about the work experience week from the Student Counsellors Jenni Soljasalo and Niina Kätkä.
The joint application to upper secondary education and preparatory education is a national procedure that Finnish educational institutions use when selecting new students to general upper secondary schools and vocational institutions as well as to preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification.
Through the joint application system, you can apply to
general upper secondary education,
initial vocational qualification,
preparatory education for programmes leading to an upper secondary qualification (TUVA),
preparatory education and training for work and independent living (TELMA), and
folk high school programmes intended for students who are required to attend compulsory education.
You can apply through the joint application system if
you have completed comprehensive school, or
you have completed similar education elsewhere (for example abroad).
The joint application period for programmes starting the following autumn usually takes place in February-March.
You can apply to all programmes included in the joint application system on the Studyinfo website.
Most programmes that participate in the joint application are in Finnish or in Swedish. There are however a few general upper secondary education programmes that are offered in English.
Some schools provide upper secondary education programmes in English that are not included in the joint application system. In these cases, you can apply directly to the school through rolling admission. You should also apply through rolling admission if you already have an upper secondary or higher education. Make sure to always check whether the programme is included in the joint application system from the programme description.
