Just like in any Finnish comprehensive school, the assessment follows the Finnish national core curriculum and it uses versatile ways of assessment. This means that tests are not the only way of assessing the students, but also many other factors have an effect on a student's assessment. Examples of these factors could be lesson work/working and homework, portfolios and working skills. We always strive to offer students different ways to show their skills and knowledge.
The students get national grades on their report cards. The scale of the grades is from 4 (has not fulfilled the requirements) to 10 (Excellent performance). Also the test grades marked in Wilma use the same Finnish scale.
In addition to the cards and the official three-way conference, the students get feedback throughout the school year for example in form of oral feedback, test grades, Wilma-marks and feedback on the (portfolio)assignments.
IB subject specific criteria are used as assessment tools. These criteria support the objectives of the subject. The achievement levels of the criteria are from 0 (has not achieved) to 8 (has achieved the highest given descriptors). The IB assessment criteria support inquiry-based teaching and learning. The subject specific criteria are shared with the students annually.
At the end of the autumn and spring term the students get a report card containing a numeric grade (or passed) for each subject. The report card gotten at the end of the autumn term is a mid-term report meaning that the report card the student gets in the spring covers the studies from both terms. The grades are based on the subject specific objectives and work during the lessons. You can read more about the assessment of the working here.
In addition to the subject specific grades the report cards contain even a behaviour grade. The only exception to this is the final report where the behaviour grade is a separate attachment. All the teachers teaching a student will give a grade based on our common assessment policy for behaviour and, based on those grades, the homeroom tutor gives the grade for the report card.
Before the autumn break the students set goals for their own learning. These goals are shared with the guardians. In February the student, homeroom tutor and the guardian(s) will discuss how well the goals have been met (+the studies in general) in a three-way conference.
At the end of the 9th grade our students won't get the official MYP-report but the Finnish final report. In addition to that the students will get our own school-specific appendix to their final report card, stating that they have been studying according to the IB MYP programme framework. However, a student is eligible to this appendix only if they have successfully completed the personal project, which is a requirement at the end of the MYP programme. A criteria-based assessment of this project can be found in this appendix, as can also be a comment from the project supervisor. In addition, the appendix states whether the student has completed the required Service as action -activities during the upper grades. Students studying in English Acquisition classes (BD classes) will also receive an IB criteria based final assessment in English in accordance with the IB language acquisition level "Proficient".
The students will also get an official certificate for the MYP Personal Project but these are usually delivered to the school first in the autumn. We will publish the info about the certificates arriving on the school webpage, so that the students can come and collect them from the school secretary.
