ATL skills

ATL comes from the words Approaches to Learning. Learning to learn is the very core of both the Finnish national curriculum and IB-philosophy. Here we have picked some of the most important ATL skills during the MYP years. They are categorized according to IB ATL-clusters and the letters marked in brackets tell the transversal skill from the Finnish curriculum.

Critical thinking

• I know how to critically evaluate the validity of information and justify my thinking. (T1)
  

• I analyze and interpret the contents of my different sources. (T4)
  

• I can set goals for my studying and learning. (T1)

Creative thinking

• I construct knowledge using my own thinking, new ideas/brainstorming and various sources.(T1)

Transfer

• I know how to apply knowledge into practice (T1)
  

• I understand the principles of algorithmic thinking and can write my own programmes in a text-based programming language. (digital skill)

Information literacy

• I can search, evaluate, select and use a variety of appropriate sources independently.(T5)
  

• I can search for information in many ways and from different sources. (T4,digitalskill)
  

• I understand the concepts of data protection and copyright and can act accordingly. I know how to create references in the agreed style. I also understand what plagiarism means. (T5,digitalskill)
  

• I evaluate my own learning and plan it accordingly. (T7)

Media literacy

• I understand the different purposes of the media and can relate to them critically. (T4)
  

• I can evaluate the reliability of internet data sources and compare different sources critically. (digital path)
  

• I know how to interpret, locate, organize and honestly use information from a variety of media sources. (T4, digital path)
  

• I can act as a producer in different online communication environments. (digital path)

Organization

• I take care of myself and my materials and I take responsibility of my everyday actions.(T3)

• I am balanced and responsible when I use technology.(T3)

• I understand and respect our common rules and agreements.(T2)

• My materials are in order. I can identify different file types, name files sensibly and group them logically (file manager).

• I work in a healthy and ergonomic way.

Affective skills

• I deal with conflicting emotions and situations in a constructive way. (T3)

• I act against disrespectful behaviour. (T3)

• I concentrate well, I’m persistent and I strive to be an active learner. (T3)

• I can deal with disappointments and failures. I strive to reach a growth mindset.

• I take responsibility for creating and supporting a good learning atmosphere in collaboration with others despite of possible differences in opinions or cultural backgrounds.(T2)
