Originally spoken in the small European country of Portugal, due to colonization the Romance language Portuguese is now the official language of Brazil, Portugal, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau and Sao Tome and Principe. It is the second most spoken romance language of the world, surpassed only by Spanish. It is the most spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere, and is spoken by more than 250 million people worldwide.
Language Neighbors: As a Romance language, Portuguese is extremely similar to Spanish; especially in writing. Its pronunciation, however, differs in several ways. This means that it is not generally mutually intelligible to Spanish speakers.
Dialects: There are at least ten formally recognized dialects of Portuguese
Word Order: The default order is Subject-Object-Verb; however, word order is generally flexible.
Sounds: Portuguese does not have the ‘th’ present in ‘think’ and ‘this’, except in the case of a few loanwords.
