English, the language of the colonizers, has spread like a virus through the world. It originated on the small island of England as a conglomeration of Saxon, German, and Latin languages. Its usage, though useful for trade and business, has threatened and endangered hundreds of languages around the world. However, it is nominally useful as a language of trade.
Do not assume, as a native English speaker, that you will automatically understand your English speaking African students. There are numerous dialects of this global language.
Status: Because of its wide global usage, English is an incredibly valuable language to speak. Unfortunately, this makes English speakers think that their language is superior to others; many English speakers are unwilling or unable to learn other languages.
Writing: English is written with the Latin alphabet. However, because of its irregular spelling patterns and competing rules caused by numerous influences over the centuries, it is incredibly difficult and irregular to learn to read and write. English speakers may have difficulty learning to read and write their own language.
Dialects: Many regional but mutually comprehensible dialects exist in North America, Great Britain, and Australia. However, English is spoken by people in every country of the world as a language of business and commerce.
Culture: because of its widespread applications, English speakers exist of every language and culture in the world.
