  • At the end of last semester, my (Sennerud's) three ENG 10 classes participated in Amnesty International's Write4Rights program. After reading the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and learning what these rights were, students wrote letters to people around the world to help those whose human rights are being threatened. Among the abuses against people were imprisonment for speaking out against their government, imprisonment of news media for doing their jobs. and disregard for the rights of indigenous peoples. Students were able to choose who they would write letters to support from a dozen representative cases. In previous years, these campaigns have led to prisoner releases and changes in policy. This activity followed our reading of Elie Wiesel's book Night in which the students learned about how Jewish prisoners' human rights were violated by the Nazis. Students were able to take action and work on their writing skills at the same time.
