Year 5 Weekly Overview

Week Beginning: Sunday 15th June 2025

Eid Mubarak and happy holidays!

As we approach the occasion of Eid al-Adha, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and blessed holiday.

It has been a busy term packed with lots of exciting learning in Year 5. We look forward to welcoming the children back on Sunday 15th June when we will begin our final preparations for the children transitioning into Year 6.

Please note: Transition morning will take place on Wednesday 18th June when children will find out their new teachers.

End of year parties will take place in the last week - more information about these will be shared after half term.

Real Life Mysteries - Special guest!

On Tuesday, Year 5 had a special visit from Bob Wallace (a DESS parent) to speak to us about his experiences of seeing a UFO! This was a very exciting opportunity for the children to link their learning to our Guided Reading text, 'Real Life Mysteries'.

Times Tables Ninjas - Final Push!

As we approach the end of Year 5, we would like to give the children a good opportunity to achieve their next Times Tables Ninjas belt. Your child's teacher may have already contacted you about ways in which the children can practice at home. We have also provided some packs of resources for these children. If your child has not received a pack and would still like some extra practice, they can speak to their teacher who will happily provide extra resources for their level.

Hot playtimes - bring activities!

Now the weather is warming up, the children will need to wear a sun hat throughout Term 3.

There will also be some playtimes which are too hot to be outside and therefore will be indoor. We strongly recommend that the children bring in an activity such as drawing, diaries, card games, puzzles or board games to help keep them occupied during these hot breaks.

Bring books in every day!

Please encourage your children to bring their library/reading books into school everyday. There may be small periods of the day where your child is able to read for 5 minutes in-between lessons or during indoor breaks!

Swimming

The girls will be swimming from next week until the end of the year.

Please ensure your son has the following with them for their swimming days:

- DESS Swimwear
- Towel
- Flip flops
- Goggles
- Swim cap (if their hair is longer than their chin)

We will be reading 'Children of Benin Kingdom' for pleasure

We will be looking at units of measure and

Science - Animals including humans

We will begin to look at children including babies.

Topic - Benin Kingdom

We will continue to explore the Benin Kingdom next week!

Reminders

Chromebooks

The Y5 children need to bring a fully charged Chromebook to school every day. If you would like to order a Chromebook, please email it@dess.org

In Year 5, children come into class by themselves in the morning. The class teachers and TA’s will be in the classroom ready to greet the children.

At the end of the day, 5A and 5B teachers will bring the children onto the shaded playground area at 2pm (1pm Thursdays) to meet you. 5C and 5D will assemble at the side of block E, outside the 5C classroom. The Year 5 team will be around to point you in the right direction.

Please remember that parents are not to enter classrooms. The school day begins at 7:30am and pick-up is from the shaded playground at 2:00pm. REMINDER: We finish at 1:00pm on a Thursday

Please bring a full water bottle to school each day.
Please bring a hat everyday.
