Year 5 Weekly Overview
Year 5 Weekly Overview
Dear parents
It has been another successful week in Middle School at DESS. Staff had collaborative session around handwriting, one of our priorities for the year. Writing by hand engages the brain with learning but also allows the children to focus more on the content of the writing as opposed to the formation of the writing. This is a key skill when they move to year 7 and year 8. Handwriting is also directly linked to reading acquisition. The school uses the Nelson handwriting scheme with children. This is not a quick fix and takes time to teach and embed.
5C and 5D had their parent engagement in music this week which was fantastic. We really hope you have enjoyed this opportunity. Going forward, each year group will engage with a different subject so you as a parent get to see all facets of the school.
This week, we nominated representatives to the school council as well as house captains. This is a great way for students to take on leadership roles, promote and voice the opinions of their peers, have their views taken into account in decisions that impact upon them and impact the school community. Congratulations to all those that were successful. We look forward to all their ideas.
One thing that I would ask your support on, is about the school café. This is exclusively for children from year 5-8. We have noticed children from year 3 and 4 have managing to get their hands on a card. In year 5, we are also facing the challenge of children buying snacks/drinks for their friends. We cannot have this. With children having different allergies, there is a risk of children being exposed to something they shouldn’t. We also have parents who would prefer their child not to be having certain things that are in the café.
Thanks for your support and have a fantastic weekend.
Warm regards,
Mr Mernagh

Mr Robinson is creating our Student Council Group once again for Term 1, consisting of child representatives from Years 3-6.
There will be one councellor for each class from Y3 - Y6.
The children who wish to participate will need to present to their own class about why they would be the best choice as the student council representative.
In the presentation the children may wish to present:
-Personal qualities they possess that will assist them in the role
-Personal skills they have which will be beneficial for the role
-Ideas and suggestions they have to improve the school overall
If your child is interested in putting themselves forward, they should let their teacher know and the teacher will confirm when the presentations will take place.
As the weather begins to cool down, we will be introducing outdoor break times. Please ensure your child brings their water bottle and hat to school every day.
Birthday treats are permitted to be brought for the class, in the following circumstances:
- treats can only be given on a birthday, no other special occasion
-treats must be allergen free
-treats must be individual (no cakes that must be cut by the teacher as this is too difficult for children to transport home)
-treats cannot be eaten during the school day and can only be taken home at the end of the school day to be eaten with the parents' permission
-wherever possible, we would urge parents to opt for other, healthier ways to celebrate a birthday.
The children will need to wear their PE kit for the whole day when they have their PE lesson on their designated days.
Below are the dates for each class' PE/Swimming lessons.
Please note that the boys will be swimming this half term.
The library days for each class will be:
5A - Thursday
5B - Sunday
5C - Tuesday
5D - Thursday

The Y5 children need to bring a fully charged Chromebook to school every day. If you would like to order a Chromebook, please email it@dess.org
In Year 5, children come into class by themselves in the morning. The class teachers and TA’s will be in the classroom ready to greet the children.
At the end of the day, 5A and 5B teachers will bring the children onto the shaded playground area at 2pm (1pm Thursdays) to meet you. 5C and 5D will assemble at the side of block E, outside the 5C classroom. The Year 5 team will be around to point you in the right direction.
Please remember that parents are not to enter classrooms. The school day begins at 7:30am and pick-up is from the shaded playground at 2:00pm. REMINDER: We finish at 1:00pm on a Thursday
Please bring a full water bottle to school each day.
Please bring a hat everyday.
