Please note that the GIRLS will now be swimming on their class Swimming/PE days.
The boys will have PE.
On Monday 4th March the Year 4 children are having their Viking Day.
On this day, we ask that the children come dressed in Viking costume. The children will enjoy a day of exciting Viking based activities.
World Book Day will be celebrated at DESS on March 7th.
The children are invited to come to school dressed as a character from a book and enjoy a day of activities centred around books.
The children will parade on the school field from 8:00am. Please feel free to come and enjoy the wonderful costumes with us.
Many children in Year 4 are coming to school without a fully charged chromebook. The children use their chromebooks throughout the day to access lesson material, etc.
Please encourage your child to get into a regular routine of charging their chromebooks daily as part of their school organisation responsibility.
Please can we continue collecting cereal boxes and snack boxes for upcoming Art and DT projects. Your child's classroom will have a labelled box for all the cardboard boxes to go into.
They will be used to make collograph and printed robots in Art in Autumn Term 1 and Viking ships in Spring 2.
Please can we also begin collecting and bringing to school a Pringles tubes. We will need one per child for the upcoming DT Project building lighthouses.
The children must wear the correct uniform to school.
Please use the link to read or remind yourself of our uniform policy:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wD7exMZyJHWf5rCFjZ3rKWn0HV9QmnOufRGgxQjSsCE/edit?usp=sharing
Teachers will contact parents via dojo to inform you if your child is not wearing the correct school uniform as a kind reminder.
You may also receive a uniform reminder slip from your child's class teacher if your child has not come to school wearing uniform correctly repeatedly.
It is important for your child to arrive at school on time as they settle into the school day better without feeling the need to rush, have time to meet and greet their teachers and friends and don't miss the beginning of the first lesson, which is usually either English or Maths.
We recommend that the children arrive at school before or at 7:20am so that they are settled in to class before lessons begin.
The Senior Leadship Team has asked teachers to monitor the children's punctuality in the mornings.
Please kindly note, that if your child is late for school more than 3 times in a fortnight, the teachers are required to send you a dojo message to inform you of this and look for ways that your child's punctuality can be improved.
Home Learning
Home Learning can be accessed on your child’s Chromebook using Google Classroom. The children will receive two regular Home Learning tasks each week. These will be set on Thursday after school and should be completed by the following Thursday. The children should bring their completed assignment in the given workbooks and back to school for marking. Please note that all Home Learning Tasks are non-compulsory. Parents may choose if you wish your child to complete these.
Guided Reading - this will be set in the Guided Reading Google Classroom
Spelling - this will be set in the Spelling Google Classroom
Maths - this will be set in the Maths Google Classroom
There may also be additional Home Learning projects set periodically. These projects will be given specific dates for completion.
SPRING 2 - Your child will recieve Spelling and Maths Home Learning
Reading Records - We have a red reading record book available for you and your child to use in order to monitor reading at home. This is, once again, a voluntary aspect of the Home learning. Parents can choose if you wish to use one of these. Please let the class teacher know if you would like one for your child.
Times Tables in Year 4
In Year 2 and 3, the children became fluent in multiplication and division using x/➗2, x/➗5 and x/➗10, x/➗3, x/➗4 and x/➗8.
In Year 4, the children will need to recall, at speed, the multiplication and division facts for all times tables (x0 – x12) by the end of the year.
Times Tables Rock Stars is an excellent platform whereby the children can develop fluency and recall, as is Multiplication Masters.
In the UK, all Year 4 children sit the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) which is statutory for primary schools. This was first introduced in the UK two years ago and is mandatory for all schools to complete in June.
The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in Mathematics.
If you would like more information, please find the link below to the Govt.UK Parent Information site:
In Year 4, we monitor the children's aqusition and fast recall of all multiplication and division facts throughout the year. In June, we complete our final Multiplication Masters assessment to mimic the manadatory testing that your child would complete if resident in the UK.

The Y4 children need to bring a fully charged Chromebook to school every day. If you would like to order a Chromebook, please email it@dess.org
In Year 4, we aim to continuing the development of your child’s self-organisation and independence and, therefore, ask that you let the children come into class by themselves in the morning when the whistle is blown on the shaded playground. The class teachers and TA’s will be in the classroom ready to greet the children.
At the end of the day, the class teachers will bring the children onto the shaded playground area at 2pm to meet you.
Please remember that parents are not to enter classrooms. The school day begins at 7:20am and pick-up is from the shaded playground at 2pm. REMINDER: we finish at 1pm on a Thursday.
Please bring a full water bottles to school each day.
