Dear Parents,
Please find some of the highlights from our week that we’re thrilled to share with you.
ChallengeME
We are beyond proud of our students who represented our school at the international ChallengeME maths competition in Dubai! Competing against children from all over, our students showcased their problem-solving skills and knowledge. This journey started with over 4,300 students from each year group all the way back in September with lunch time sessions and before school sessions. A massive shout out to Ibrahim Zaheer in 3A and Kayan Patel in 4C who finished 3rd and 7th respectively in their age bands.
World Book Day for Staff and Children
World Book Day was a spectacular celebration of reading and imagination! Staff and children came dressed as their favourite book characters, whilst our gardens were filled with entries from the art competition. The children were also astounded to hear David Walliams take time out to speak to the children of DESS about his book, ‘There’s a Snake in my School’. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the day so magical.
White Rose Maths Parent Workshop
We are really excited to invite parents to our White Rose Maths parent workshop on Friday 2nd May at 8.30am-9.30am in the Small Gym. This will be led by a specialist who is coming over from the UK to work alongside DESS staff next week. This is a great opportunity to share with parents how we teach maths in school and explore ways you can support your child’s learning at home. The sign up has been very positive so please make sure to sign up early to keep your place. Please see Mr Bray’s Parental Correspondence with further information.
Year 5 Coffee Morning – Rescheduled
Please remember that the Year 5 ‘Welcome to Upper School’ coffee morning with Mrs Rinaldi has been rescheduled to next week, Tuesday 29th April.
Successful Fire Drill
Safety is always a top priority at DESS, and we are pleased to report that our recent fire drill was a complete success. Students and staff exited calmly and efficiently, following all procedures to the letter. It is essential to be prepared in the event of any emergencies.
As always, thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind Regards,
Mr Mernagh
Head of Middle School

Thank you for taking the time to meet with your child's teacher last week. As always, we endeavor to provide the best for all the children and we are always grateful for the support we receive at home. To assist the children at home, we have provided parents with a document which is designed to help Year 5 children transition smoothly into Year 6. Here, you will find a range of resources across the curriculum which may help some of the children achieve their targets.
We hope you find this useful.
To encourage the children to read a range of different books, we have introduced a new competition: Reading Bingo. Each square of the bingo sheet has a different focus which the children have to find in different books. Once they have read that book, they can get it signed off by either a teacher, librarian or yourself.
Children will receive 10 house points for completing the sheet!
The children are now beginning to enjoy some time outdoors at playtime.
Things to consider:
Please pack items for 1st break in your child's lunchbox that they can eat easily without taking their whole lunch box. This prevents the lunchbox being in the heat for too long.
Now the weather is warming up, the children will need to wear a sun hat throughout Term 3.
For those children with fair skin, you may wish to pack sunsreen or apply this before school.
The children will be eating their majority of their packed lunch inside the classroom during our lunchtime break.
Please encourage your children to bring their library/reading books into school everyday. There may be small periods of the day where your child is able to read for 5 minutes in-between lessons or during indoor breaks!
The boys are now swimming.
Please ensure your son has the following with them for their swimming days:
- DESS Swimwear
- Towel
- Flip flops
- Goggles
- Swim cap (if their hair is longer than their chin)

We will begin our new Science topic on reversible and irreversible changes, beginning with the change: 'dissolving'.
We will be continuing our Shang Dynasty topic, exploring China's rich history!
The Y5 children need to bring a fully charged Chromebook to school every day. If you would like to order a Chromebook, please email it@dess.org
In Year 5, children come into class by themselves in the morning. The class teachers and TA’s will be in the classroom ready to greet the children.
At the end of the day, 5A and 5B teachers will bring the children onto the shaded playground area at 2pm (1pm Thursdays) to meet you. 5C and 5D will assemble at the side of block E, outside the 5C classroom. The Year 5 team will be around to point you in the right direction.
Please remember that parents are not to enter classrooms. The school day begins at 7:30am and pick-up is from the shaded playground at 2:00pm. REMINDER: We finish at 1:00pm on a Thursday
Please bring a full water bottle to school each day.
Please bring a hat everyday.
