Year 5 Weekly Overview
Year 5 Weekly Overview
Dear Parents
We have had lots of things to celebrate this week. The total collected by the school from Charity Day was a whopping QAR41,850. This was greatly appreciated by Qatar Red Cresent. Well done to everyone for this community effort.
Our Year 3 children raised QAR9132 by doing a sponsored Times Tables challenge in celebration of International Children’s Day. The money will go towards two projects with Qatar Charity.
Well done to our children who competed last weekend at the u11 BSME Games at DC and the DESS cup which we hosted. Our girls managed to bring home a trophy by finishing 3rd in the Plate Cup! This was followed by our boys who finished 1st in the Plate Cup! This weekend was packed with action as our Year 5 and 6 girls’ netball, football, and boys’ football and basketball squads competed in the inaugural DESS Cup, with teams from DESS Doha and DESS Dubai going head-to-head. A sea of red shirts filled the pitches as both teams played with great spirit and determination in this first-ever friendly tournament between the two schools. DESS Dubai came out on top with DESS Doha being very close runners up! Our appreciation goes to the staff for setting this up and parents for preparing the children.
Our year 5 children had a fantastic overnight leadership camp this week. The children showed teamwork, tried new tasks and overcame lots of fears by showing bravery and resilience. These trips require lots of careful planning so again, I thank the staff for giving up their time away from families to facilitate the trip.
This week we had an expected fire drill. The children were able to evacuate safely and quickly to their muster point.
This week I had the pleasure of looking at children’s work in maths books and was very impressed the high standards of presentation on display. Children are being challenged to meet the learning objective in a variety of ways which is why White Rose Maths has been an excellent resource for us.
Next week is sports week so we look forward to seeing the children get active and hopefully you can join us at some point.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind Regards,
Mr Mernagh
Head of Middle School
Well done to all of the Year 5 girls and boys who attended the Blue Pearl trip. Their behaviour was exceptional throughout and they demonstrated great perseverance and teamwork throughout the trip. It was great to see so many children overcoming challenges and most importantly, having fun.
A huge thank you to all of the staff: Mr Mernagh, Mr Bray, Mr Hatchman, Mrs O'Connor, Mrs Cook, Mrs Davision and Mrs Vaid who all gave up their own time to give the children a wonderful experience.

Next week, the whole school will be taking part in our exciting sports week. Year 5 will take part in their activities on Monday 3rd February with the opportunity for parents to come and watch between 12:30pm and 2pm.
Please ensure your daughter/son comes to school on their sports day wearing their house colours t-shirt (as plain as possible) and DESS PE shorts. Please also remind them to not wear any jewellery or watches and tie back any hair longer than the chin. Also please ensure they have a water bottle, plenty of food (for an active day) and a jumper or hat and sunscreen depending on the weather.
All of these events will be on the school field, please be aware if you are attending not to encroach onto the field to allow our pupils space to participate and enjoy the activities. Please stay on the concrete paving, pebbled floor by the brown benches or hill of the field. If you have any questions regarding the sports days please contact the PE department via the PE departments dojo.
Please note that swimming will happen as normal.
Over the next few weeks, Year 5 will be completing their very exciting design and technology project: biscuit making! This will involve the children bringing their biscuit recipe designs to life in the kitchen. We will be providing the ingredients to make the biscuits along with some additional toppings. With your permission, the children are welcome to bring additional toppings to add to their biscuits but please ensure that they are nut-free. We will be providing all biscuit ingredients, chocolate chips, cooking chocolate and cocoa powder.
